    Abstract:

    Recent approaches to Stress regulation have emphasized coordination among multiple biological systems. This study builds on evidence that hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity should be considered in coordination with other Stress-sensitive biological systems to characterize healthy responses. Healthy African-Americans (n=115) completed the Trier Social Stress Test, and biological responses were assessed through salivary cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), alpha amylase (sAA), and C-reactive protein (sCRP). Multilevel modeling demonstrated that cortisol responses typically aligned with changes in DHEA-S, sAA, and sCRP across the session. At the same time, the degree of cortisol coordination with sAA and sCRP varied by participants' subjective Stress following the task; participants with higher Secondary Stress appraisals showed greater cortisol-sAA alignment, whereas those experiencing more negative affect showed greater cortisol-sCRP alignment. Results highlight the importance of a multisystem approach to Stress and suggest that positive HPA axis coordination with the autonomic response, but not with the immune/inflammatory response, may be adaptive.

    Abstract:

    As underground development continues at great depths, the danger of rock bursts will inevitably increase. It is important to consider countermeasures for avoiding rock bursts in underground work. In Japan, rock bursts have actually been experienced during construction of several tunnels, including the Kan-etsu tunnel construction project, during which many rock bursts were observed. Stress analysis of tunnels is performed based on initial Stress measurements in the base rock. In addition, AE measurement has been adopted in construction management, allowing safer excavation. Collective analysis of the data obtained has been shown to be effective for safety control during excavation of hard base rock. In this research, initial Stress measurements in base rock, Secondary Stress analysis around a tunnel, and AE measurements are examined. Based on the results of this analysis, it is clear that the generation of rock bursts is related to the presence of geological discontinuities.

    Abstract:

    A number of factors contribute to social workers' states of mind including exposure to intense emotionality and disturbance, job satisfaction, burnout, Secondary Stress, and the perceived value attached to social work. Together these can lead to placing social workers at risk of vicarious traumatisation. While vicarious traumatisation can lead to posttraumatic Stress, it may be important to explore whether posttraumatic growth is a possibility. The aim was to provide evidence for growth in social workers and to test for its association with factors that are known to contribute to the state of mind of the social worker, and thus affect countertransference reactions. Sixty-two social workers completed self-report measures showing those who felt more valued in their professional role scored lower on burnout, higher on job satisfaction, and positive growth. The role of these variables as factors influencing countertransference reactions is discussed.

    Abstract We analyse the state of Stress in northeastern Iran, based on systematic inversion of available focal mechanisms of earthquakes. The calculated average Stress regimes in this area indicates major N32°E trending compression expressed in reverse and strike-slip focal mechanisms, consistent with the plate convergence in Iran that shows clockwise deflection with respect to Arabia-Eurasia convergence. A Secondary Stress regime is reliably characterised from our Stress inversion, with a N172°E trending compression expressed in focal mechanisms of predominant strike-slip type. Whereas the NNE–SSW and N–S compressions coexist in the western Kopet Dagh, East Alborz and the northwestern Doruneh fault zone, where the structural grain trends ENE–WSW, the N–S compression is absent in the eastern and central Kopet Dagh, Binalud and northeastern Doruneh fault zone, where the structural grain trends ESE–WNW, perpendicular to relative motion. This configuration reveals Stress partitioning involving oblique compression with significant along-belt component of left-lateral shear to the west, in contrast to typical belt-perpendicular compression in the eastern sub-area.
