Today, users in general cannot use or operate presently available Security tools effectively because they lack interface with high usability making them difficult to use or operate. However, if the Security tools are effectively used, it is possible to find potential vulnerability information of a client computer. Therefore, we consider Security Scanners, and develop an interface for them with high usability based on human interface study, so that even general users can use them to find and fix vulnerability of their computers. We perform usability evaluation based on human interface study to the interface we have developed and we show that high usability has been realized from an objective viewpoint.

Recently, illegal access has been increasing explosively. Not only experts but also beginners need to cope up with vulnerability of a system promptly and properly. In such cases, a Security Scanner is an efficient tool to point out the vulnerability. However, for general users, most of the presently available Security Scanners are hard to install and operate because they have considerably poor usability. We have developed a Security Scanner with high usability, called USAGI. USAGI is a Web based Security Scanner, therefore it should not depend on operating systems, and should not need any installation. However, Web based Scanners cannot inspect a host which cannot issue a scan request such as Internet appliance. Moreover, a Web based Scanner is not effective for a host inside firewall, if one would like to check vulnerability against insider threat. To overcome these problems, we design a portable version of USAGI, while keeping high usability. We adopted Perl and Macromedia Flash for development of the Security Scanner to realize portability. Since all the scanning processes are performed only by a few mouse clicks, our Security Scanner can be implemented on a small handheld computer without keyboard. In functionality, we have realized high extensionality and reliability by using the external script of Nessus.

Planning is necessary before the process. This is particularly true for how a database will be used and configuration of the server's e-mail. GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner can be installed on different operating systems such as Windows 2000 (with SP4 or higher), Windows XP (with SP2 or higher), and Windows Server 2003. To install GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner, several steps need to be performed. The steps include: download the languardnss8.exe file from the GFI Web site, place the file into a temporary directory, and then double-click on it. Depending on the version of Windows being used, a Security warning may appear asking whether or not to run the file. If such a warning is received, click on the Run button. Windows will then launch the InstallShield Wizard, which will extract the various files used by the Setup process.

The management console is used for almost every task performed with GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner. An understanding of how the management console is laid out is critical for using the product in an efficient and effective manner. Choosing the LANguard Network Security Scanner command accesses the management console. When the management console first opens, there will be a screen that asks if a local computer scan, a complete network scan, or a custom scan is to be performed. The right side of the console is currently split into three separate panes, although in some situations only two of the panes are used. The upper middle pane is the Scanned Computers pane. When a Security scan is performed, the computers that have been scanned will be listed in this pane. Typically, this pane will show each machine's Internet Protocol (IP) address, Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) name, operating system, and service pack level.

For the initial scan, it is important to perform a local computer scan. As the name implies, a local computer scan checks the computer that GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner is running on for any missing patches or known vulnerabilities. It is important to start out with this type of scan because one depends on this server to give accurate information about the other servers on the network. If the server that is running GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner is missing Security patches or has other known vulnerabilities, then there is a chance that the server can be compromised by a hacker, Trojan, or some other means. One should make sure that the server running GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner is secure before using it to secure the rest of the network. Since this is the first scan, and one is probably still trying to get used to the administrative interface, a scan can be performed using the default settings. This will be a good starting point. However, no matter what type of scan one is using, the basic steps are always the same.

NessusWeb provides public accessibility for authorized users and supports SSL communication, multiple sessions and centralized scan configurations and management of scan reports. It was created using a multi-tier distributed architecture. The client tier is a web browser. The Apache Secure Web Server including Apache HTTP server and Tomcat serves as the web tier. As a servlet engine, Tomcat is used to generate dynamic web content and monitor the Nessusd server through the SSL channel using the NTP (Nessus Transport Protocol). The Nessusd server forms the business tier, which performs the actual network Security scans. User scan configurations and network vulnerability scan results generated by the Nessusd server are saved into a MySQL database, which provides the back-end storage. Two user interfaces were implemented, one for the administrator and one for all other users. This paper presents an overview of the design and implementation of the NessusWeb project.
