Numerical Simulation of Wire Mesh Security Screens subjected to Low-velocity Impact

Hitherto, Security Screens have been designed and manufactured to meet these requirements and comply with standards largely by trial and error and experimentation. There have been few attempts in the past and hardly any published literature on numerical simulation of Security Screens subjected to impact. The present research is aimed at developing a Finite Element (FE) model for numerical simulation of low velocity impact on wire mesh Security Screens such as that due to a potential intruder kicking or punching or hitting with a blunt instrument. In order to determine the material properties for input into a macro-scale FE model of the wire mesh Screen, the response of wire mesh coupons subjected to quasi-static tensile, bending and in-plane shear loads were studied by experimental testing. In the finite element model of the Security Screen, the mesh itself is modelled as a plate with homogenised (smeared) properties to save computational time. The properties of the homogenised plate representing the wire mesh were selected to match the tensile and bending responses observed experimentally in the coupon tests. Drop-tower tests were conducted to study the dynamic behaviour of wire mesh coupons subjected to low-velocity impacts, which were compared to results of numerical simulations for additional validation of the proposed finite element models of the wire mesh Screen. Numerical simulations of low velocity impacts on the full Screen including the metallic frame, joints, fasteners and the mesh modelled as a homogenised plate were performed and compared to results of low velocity dynamic impact tests on full Security Screens of different types (made by the same manufacturer). These numerical simulations show good correlation with the experimental results, both in terms of the impact energy required for failure and the observed failure modes. The FE models were then employed to study variations and enhancements in design to improve their resistance to impact, which can be used to develop Security Screens with higher levels of protection against home invasion

The purpose of this study was to validate a two-item written food Security Screen that health providers may use to identify food inSecurity in their patient populations.Methods: Data were obtained from 150 parents or guardians who brought a child to a dental appointment at The Center for Pediatric Dentistry, University of Washington, Seattle, Wash., USA. The sensitivity and specificity of two written questions were determined by comparing with the United States Department of Agriculture Six-item Short Form of the Food Security Survey Module.Results: The sample consisted of 141 surveys after those with critical questions left blank were removed. The prevalence of food inSecurity was found to be 31 percent at the Center for Pediatric Dentistry. The six-item Screen identified 44 foodinsecure families with an affirmative response to two or more questions. Compared with the six-item Screen, the two-item Screen was found to have 95.4 percent sensitivity and 83.5 percent specificity.Conclusions: The two-item food Security Screen was found to be sensitive and reasonably specific, providing a quick and accurate method to identify food-insecure families.
