  • transformative learning through virtual patient simulations predicting critical student reflections
    Clinical Simulation in Nursing, 2014
    Co-Authors: A J Kleinheksel
    Abstract:

Abstract Background The Digital Clinical Experience™ is a simulation software that allows nursing students to interview and examine virtual patient and then write Self-Reflections on their performance. Methods A secondary data analysis was conducted on 130 master of science in nursing students' performance in the Digital Clinical Experience™ using a framework of situated cognition and transformative learning theory. Employing a within-stage mixed-model design, content analysis of structured Self-Reflections was conducted using Cook's Reflection Rating Rubric. Multiple regression was performed using Self-Reflection scores as the dependent variable; independent variables included time spent in simulation, lines of dialog, and primary and secondary clinical items discovered. Results Critical Self-Reflection indicating transformative learning was predicted by the number of secondary clinical items students uncover during their virtual patient interview. Yet, this level of Self-Reflection did not occur for students who discovered only the primary clinical findings. Conclusions This study presents evidence that virtual patient simulations can provide transformative learning experiences in nursing. However, to facilitate a transformative learning experience, these simulations must allow students to explore the presentation, history, and backstory of the virtual patient in depth, beyond superficial clinical findings.

  • Rediscovering the Self Through Self-Reflection and Transformative Learning
    LEARNing Landscapes, 2015
    Co-Authors: Vanden Thong
    Abstract:

This article explores the relevancy and potential benefits of Self-Reflection and reflective practice in promoting personal and professional development. In addition, it reviews the concept of transformative learning in conjunction with Self-Reflection since the two constructs connect to each other as well as to the process of human development. Moreover, different educational programs and activities that increase the likelihood of change and transformation are discussed. Lastly, this article concludes with my personal reflections on my learning and growth as I adapted to change and navigated new environments while studying abroad in Great Britain.

  • EDUCON - Development and Evaluation of an Assessment Tool for Self-Reflection
2020 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON), 2020
Co-Authors: Veronika Thurner, Sabine Hammer, Sarah Ottinger, Maria Waldleitner
    Abstract:

Self-Reflection is an important competence for self-directing one’s learning process in an effective way. However, not all students are sufficiently well equipped with this ability. To help students acquire this ability, we conceptualize our notion of Self-Reflection by extending existing models. On this basis, we develop an assessment tool for Self-Reflection. Based on about 300 data sets, we evaluate the quality of our assessment tool by analyzing to what extent it reliably measures the different aspects of Self-Reflection. By performing a Principal Component Analysis, we identify four factors that we relate to the theoretical conceptualization of our notion of Self-Reflection.

  • Does self reflection and insight correlate with academic performance in medical students
    BMC medical education, 2013
Co-Authors: Sandra Carr, Paula H Johnson
    Abstract:

Background Medical students in academic difficulty are often described as lacking insight. The Self Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS) is a tool for measuring insight which has been validated in medical students. We investigated whether self reflection and insight scores correlate with academic performance in Year 4 medical students from a six year undergraduate medical degree, and whether self reflection and insight changes after one year of clinical training.

  • MobileHCI Adjunct - Retroflection: Self-Reflection for Knowledge and Culture Sustainability
Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services Adjunct - MobileHCI '15, 2015
Co-Authors: Genovefa Kefalidou, Viet Hoang, Muhammed Hunaif Padiyil, Benjamin Bedwell
    Abstract:

Self-Reflection constitutes a medium and a method for recording personal experiences and activities. It allows for both concurrent and retrospective reflections bringing awareness of processes, emotions and situations. Awareness can enhance experiential learning and knowledge acquisition. This is particularly important within the digital humanities field as Self-Reflection can reveal not only personal experiences while navigating within a cultural space but can also provide opportunities for acquiring new knowledge, built on the generated experiences, thus sustaining and developing socio-cultural knowledge. We call this process retroflection. This short paper discusses how Self-Reflection can facilitate sustainability of knowledge within a cultural setting and through a platform developed for sharing Self-Reflection experiences.

  • MobileHCI Adjunct - The Role of Accidental Self-Reflection in Wearable Camera Research
Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services Adjunct - MobileHCI '15, 2015
Co-Authors: Alexandra Young, Benjamin Bedwell, Anya Skatova, Tom Rodden, Victoria Shipp
    Abstract:

Self-Reflection is an important tool for understanding and encouraging behavior change for wellbeing and personal sustainability. This can be a deliberate choice, or unintentionally prompted decision. In this paper we discuss Self-Reflection on participating in an experience sampling study. 14 Participants wore an Autographer camera for five working days. During the post study interview participants reflected on whether the camera prompted Self-Reflection or behavior change. We discuss how the experience of wearing cameras can prompt changes in routines through Self-Reflection, and the implications of this for sustainability research in HCI.
