    Abstract:

    The Semantic web vision is one in which rich, ontology-based Semantic Markup is widely available, both to enable sophisticated interoperability among agents and to support human web users in locating and making sense of information. The availability of Semantic Markup on the web also opens the way to novel, sophisticated forms of question answering. AquaLog is a portable question-answering system which takes queries expressed in natural language and an ontology as input and returns answers drawn from one or more knowledge bases (KBs), which instantiate the input ontology with domain-specific information. AquaLog makes use of the GATE NLP platform, string metrics algorithms, WordNet and a novel ontology-based relation similarity service to make sense of user queries with respect to the target knowledge base. Finally, although AquaLog has primarily been designed for use with Semantic web languages, it makes use of a generic plug-in mechanism, which means it can be easily interfaced to different ontology servers and knowledge representation platforms.

We say that AquaLog is portable because the configuration time required to customize the system for a particular ontology is negligible. AquaLog presents an elegant solution in which different strategies are combined together in a novel way. It makes use of the GATE NLP platform, string metric algorithms, WordNet and a novel ontology-based relation similarity service to make sense of user queries with respect to the target KB. Moreover it also includes a learning component, which ensures that the performance of the system improves over the time, in response to the particular community jargon used by end users.

    Abstract:

    The Semantic Web (SW) offers an opportunity to develop novel, sophisticated forms of question answering (QA). Specifically, the availability of distributed Semantic Markup on a large scale opens the way to QA systems which can make use of such Semantic information to provide precise, formally derived answers to questions. At the same time the distributed, heterogeneous, large-scale nature of the Semantic information introduces significant challenges. In this paper we describe the design of a QA system, PowerAqua, designed to exploit Semantic Markup on the web to provide answers to questions posed in natural language. PowerAqua does not assume that the user has any prior information about the Semantic resources. The system takes as input a natural language query, translates it into a set of logical queries, which are then answered by consulting and aggregating information derived from multiple heterogeneous Semantic sources.

    Abstract:

    In this short paper, we examine current Semantic Web application and we highlight what we see as a shift away from first generation Semantic Web applications, towards a new generation of applications, designed to exploit the large amounts of heterogeneous Semantic Markup, which are increasingly becoming available. Our analysis aims both to highlight the main features that can be used to compare and contrast current Semantic Web applications, as well as providing an initial blueprint for characterizing the nature of Semantic Web applications. Indeed, our ultimate goal is to specify a number of criteria, which Semantic Web applications ought to satisfy, if we want to move away from conventional Semantic systems and develop a new generation of Semantic Web applications, which can succeed in applying Semantic technology to the challenging context provided by the World-Wide-Web.

    As Semantic Markup becomes ubiquitous, it will become important to be able to ask queries and obtain answers, using natural language (NL) expressions, rather than the keyword-based retrieval mechanisms used by the current search engines. AquaLog is a portable question-answering system which takes queries expressed in natural language and an ontology as input and returns answers drawn from the available Semantic Markup. We say that AquaLog is portable, because the configuration time required to customize the system for a particular ontology is negligible. AquaLog combines several powerful techniques in a novel way to make sense of NL queries and to map them to Semantic Markup. Moreover it also includes a learning component, which ensures that the performance of the system improves over time, in response to the particular community jargon used by the end users. In this paper we describe the current version of the system, in particular discussing its portability, its reasoning capabilities, and its learning mechanism.

    This article considers a preliminary model for the Semantic marking of maritime texts from the colonial period in Latin America. The author first locates Semantic marking as an intellectual activity, and proposes a general approach to the Markup process. He then outlines a provisional design for the encoding of maritime texts, based on four functional categories, and subsequently identifies some of the procedural and conceptual problems that his scheme presents. The author concludes by reflecting on ways that issues of perspective are central when attempting to carry out Semantic Markup

El ensayo ubica primero el marcado semántico como actividad intelectual, y propone un acercamiento general a tal proceso. Después detalla un diseño provisional para la codificación de los textos marítimos, basado en cuatro categorías funcionales.     Abstract:

    The lack of Semantic Markup is a major barrier to the development of more intelligent document processing on the Web. Current HTML Markup is used only to indicate the structure and lay-out of documents, but not the document Semantics. Unfortunately, proposals from the AI community for Webbased knowledge-representation languages can hardly expect wide acceptance on the Web. Even if unpalatable for the AI community, the question should instead be how well AI concepts can be fitted into the Markup languages that are widely supported on the Web, either now or in the foreseeable future. We provide a survey and analysis of traditional, new, and arising Web standards and show how they can be used to represent machine-processable Semantics of Web sources. The results of this paper should help AI researchers and practitioners to apply their results to real Web documents, instead of basing themselves on AI specific representations that have no chance of becoming widely used on the Web.
