  • Yeasts in Pucciniomycotina
    Mycological Progress, 2017
    Co-Authors: Franz Oberwinkler
    Abstract:

Recent results in taxonomic, phylogenetic and ecological studies of basidiomycetous yeast research are remarkable. Here, Pucciniomycotina with yeast stages are reviewed. The phylogenetic origin of single-cell basidiomycetes still remains unsolved. But the massive occurrence of yeasts in basal basidiomycetous taxa indicates their early evolutionary presence. Yeasts in Cryptomycocolacomycetes, Mixiomycetes, Agaricostilbomycetes, Cystobasidiomycetes, Septobasidiales, Heterogastridiomycetes, and Microbotryomycetes will be discussed. The apparent loss of yeast stages in Tritirachiomycetes, Atractiellomycetes, Helicobasidiales, Platygloeales, Pucciniales, Pachnocybales, and Classiculomycetes will be mentioned briefly for comparative purposes with dimorphic sister taxa. Since most phylogenetic papers suffer considerably from the lack of adequate illustrations, plates for representative species of orders have been arranged. The structural qualities are the prerequisites for specific functions that cannot be expressed by phylogenetic dendrograms.

  • heterobasidiomycetes from rancho grande venezuela
    Mycotaxon, 2003
    Co-Authors: Peter Roberts
    Abstract:

Thirty species of heterobasidiomycetous fungi belonging to the orders Atractiellales, Auriculariales, Dacrymycetales, Exidiales, Septobasidiales, and Tremellales are described or reported from the Rancho Grande area of the the Parque Nacion 'Henri Pittier' in Aragua State, Venezuela. Exidiopsis badia and E. endoramifera are described as new.

  • Unexpected diversity of basidiomycetous endophytes in sapwood and leaves of Hevea
    2016
Co-Authors: Rachael Martin, Demetra Skaltsas, Romina Gazis, Priscila Chaverri, David S Hibbett
    Abstract:

Abstract: Research on fungal endophytes has ex-panded dramatically in recent years, but little is known about the diversity and ecological roles of endophytic basidiomycetes. Here we report the analysis of 310 basidiomycetous endophytes isolated from wild and planted populations of the rubber tree genus, Hevea. Species accumulation curves were nonasymptotic, as in the majority of endophyte surveys, indicating that more sampling is needed to recover the true diversity of the community. One hundred eighteen OTUs were delimited, represent-ing nine orders of Basidiomycota (Agaricales, Athe-liales, Auriculariales, Cantharellales, Hymenochae-tales, Polyporales, Russulales, Septobasidiales, Tremellales). The diversity of basidiomycetous endo-phytes found inhabiting wild populations of Hevea was comparable to that present in plantations. However, when samples were segregated by tissue type, sapwood of wild populations was found to contain a higher number of species than sapwood of planted trees. Seventy-five percent of isolates were members of the Polyporales, the majority in the phlebioid clade. Most of the species belong to clades known to cause a white-rot type of wood decay. Two species in the insect-associated genus Septobasidium were isolated. The most frequently isolated genera included Bjerkandera, Ceriporia, Phanerochaete, Phle
