    Objectives. We evaluated the racial misclassification of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) in cancer incidence and all-cause mortality data by Indian Health Service (IHS) Contract Health Service Delivery Area (CHSDA).Methods. We evaluated data from 3 sources: IHS-National Vital Statistics System (NVSS), IHS-National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR)/Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program, and National Longitudinal Mortality Study (NLMS). We calculated, within each data source, the sensitivity and classification ratios by sex, IHS region, and urban–rural classification by CHSDA county.Results. Sensitivity was significantly greater in CHSDA counties (IHS-NVSS: 83.6%; IHS-NPCR/SEER: 77.6%; NLMS: 68.8%) than non-CHSDA counties (IHS-NVSS: 54.8%; IHS-NPCR/SEER: 39.0%; NLMS: 28.3%).     Abstract:

    Web Services promise universal interoperability through integration of Services developed by independent providers. The coming of the Cloud Computing paradigm extends the need to share resources (e.g., platform, infrastructure, data) that are accessible as Web Services. This means that a key factor to build complex and valuable business processes among cooperating organizations relies on the efficiency of automate the discovering of appropriate Web Services. The increasing availability of Web Services that offer similar functionalities requires mechanisms to go beyond the pure functional discovery. This chapter proposes the evaluation of Web Service Contracts, which define non-functional properties (NFPs) and applicability conditions associated with Web Services, as a solution to automate process composition and enactment. Today, there is a lack of tools and algorithms that fully support this solution due to several open issues. First, existing languages don’t provide the right constructs for the specification of Web Service Contracts. Second, the lack of standard languages determines heterogeneity in Web Service Contract specifications raising interoperability issues. Third, Web Service Contract evaluation is only partially supported by existing discovery engines and composition tools when combining different Services from different providers. This chapter proposes some research efforts on addressing these open issues.

    Service Contract matchmaking represents a promising path towards the definition of accurate Service selection mechanisms. Basically, it consists in evaluating the degree of match between preferences explicitly defined by a Service customer and the Contractual terms offered by Service providers. However, Service Contract matchmaking assumes that a Service customer is always aware of the Contractual terms on which to specify preferences. In reality, a Service customer often specifies preferences only on a very limited set of common and well-known terms (e.g., price). This paper proposes a new approach to Service Contract selection that adopts the value in use concept to quantify the trade-off between benefits and sacrifices related to Contractual terms on which the customer has omitted to specify preferences. Experimental activities in the car insurance domain demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

    Abstract:

    Service Contracts represent the agreement between the Service provider and potential Service consumers to use a specific Service under given conditions; for each Service multiple Service Contracts are available. In this paper we investigate a new approach to support the Service Contract selection by exploiting preferences both explicitly defined by a user and implicitly inferred from his/her context. The core of our approach is the use of multi-constraint queries expressed on punctual values and on textual descriptions. Both semantic-based and information retrieval (IR) techniques are applied. Experimental evaluations show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

    Abstract:

    Recently, the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model has been increasingly supported, becoming a major part of the new emerging cloud computing paradigms. Although SaaS exists in different forms, supporting and providing SaaS developed based Web Services has attracted a large effort from industries and academics because this form of SaaS allows software to be easily composed and integrated to offer new Services for customers. Even though various Service composition techniques, based on functional and non-functional parameters, have been proposed, the issue of Service Contract compatibility has been neglected. This issue is of paramount importance in the Web Services-based SaaS model because Services are provided by different providers, associated with different Contracts which are defined by different specifications. This paper proposes techniques for supporting Service composers to deal with the heterogeneity of Service Contracts in Service composition. We describe a novel approach for modeling and mapping different Service Contract specifications, and a set of techniques for evaluating Service Contract compatibility. Our techniques consider Contract terms associated with data and control flows, as well as composition patterns. Illustrating scenarios are proposed to demonstrate the efficiency of our techniques.

    In recent years, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) have emerged as the main solution for the integration of legacy systems with new technologies in the enterprise world. A Service is usually governed by a client Service Contract (CSC) that specifies, among other requirements, the rate at which a Service should be accessed, and limits it to no more than a number of Service requests during an observation period. Several approaches, using both static and dynamic, credit-based strategies, have been developed in order to enforce the rate specified in the CSC. Existing approaches have problems related to starvation, approximations used in calculations, and rapid credit consumption under certain conditions. In this paper, we propose and validate DoWSS, a doubly-weighted algorithm for Service traffic shaping. We show via simulation that DoWSS possesses several advantages: it eliminates the approximation issues, prevents starvation and contains the rapid credit consumption issue in existing credit-based approaches.

    Enterprise networks may host multiple Services, located in (potentially physically distinct) servers; an example would be Web server farms using Web 2.0 and/or SOA-based technologies. A Service is governed by a client Service Contract (CSC) that specifies, among other requirements, the rate at which the Service may be accessed so that a particular Service host is not unduly overwhelmed. We consider the case where the CSC limits the rate to a Service provider to no more than X requests per second, with an observation/enforcement time interval of T seconds. In this paper we define, simulate, and analyze CASTS (credit-based algorithm for Service traffic shaping), a Service traffic shaping algorithm to meet the Service access requirements (SAR) under the above constraints. Our analysis includes convergence times, responsiveness, and the verification whether the system respects the Service Contract.

    Abstract:

    A warranty is a Service Contract between a manufacturer and a customer which plays a vital role in many businesses and legal transactions. In this paper, various three-level Service Contracts will be presented among the following three participants; a manufacturer, an agent, and a customer. In order to obtain a better result, the interaction between the aforementioned participants will be modeled using the game theory approach. Under non-cooperative and semi-cooperative games, the optimal sale price, warranty period and warranty price for the manufacturer and the optimal maintenance cost or repair cost for the agent are obtained by maximizing their profits. The satisfaction of the customer is also maximized by being able to choose one of the suggested options from the manufacturer and the agent, based on the risk parameter. Several numerical examples and managerial insights are presented and used to illustrate the models presented in this paper.

    Abstract:

    When it is not economical to carry out maintenance in-house, out-sourcing to an external agent is an alternate viable option. In this paper, we study a simple maintenance Service Contract involving a single agent (providing the maintenance Service) and a single customer (owner of the equipment and recipient of the maintenance Service). We develop a simple model to obtain the optimal strategies for both the customer and the agent. We give a complete characterization of the strategies along with some sensitivity analysis and discuss some extensions.
