  • Short-Circuit current calculation approach with dynamic load considered in PSS/E Short Circuit portion
IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, 2012
    Co-Authors: J. T. Ge, Wei Cao, Z. G. Ding
    Abstract:

Short-Circuit calculation is very important not only for traditional power grid but also for smart grid. The impact of dynamic load characteristics on Short Circuit current has long been underestimated or overlooked with very little considerations in power system analysis packages which are not favorable especially for strong smart grid. The key points of Short-Circuit calculation considering dynamic load characteristics in Short-Circuit portion of PSS/E were studied with an approach developed. The results from the approach proposed in this paper were compared with the ones from both dynamic simulation of PSS/E and Short-Circuit portion of BPA. Calculation results show that the proposed approach by adept use of Short-Circuit current calculation portion of PSS/E is feasible to calculate the Short-Circuit dynamic load feeding current.

  • Short Circuit protection Circuits for silicon carbide power transistors
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2016
Co-Authors: Dianeperle Sadik, Juan Colmenares, Georg Tolstoy, Mietek Bakowski, Dimosthenis Peftitsis, Jacek Rabkowski, Hans-peter Nee
    Abstract:

An experimental analysis of the behavior under Short-Circuit conditions of three different silicon-carbide (SiC) 1200-V power devices is presented. It is found that all devices take up a substantial voltage, which is favorable for detection of Short Circuits. A transient thermal device simulation was performed to determine the temperature stress on the die during a Short-Circuit event, for the SiC MOSFET. It was found that, for reliability reasons, the Short-Circuit time should be limited to values well below Si IGBT tolerances. Guidelines toward a rugged design for Short-Circuit protection (SCP) are presented with an emphasis on improving the reliability and availability of the overall system. A SiC device driver with an integrated SCP is presented for each device-type, respectively, where a Short-Circuit detection is added to a conventional driver design in a simple way. The SCP driver was experimentally evaluated with a detection time of 180 ns. For all devices, Short-Circuit times well below 1 $\upmu\text{s}$ were achieved.

  • Analysis of Fault Recorder Data for Short-Circuit Current in a 500kV Busbar Short-Circuit Accident
    Advanced Materials Research, 2011
Co-Authors: Wei Cao, Yong-sheng Wang, Bei Liu, Wei Wang
    Abstract:

The three-phase Short-Circuit fault of the 500 kV busbar of Waigaoqiao No.2 Power Plant was described, and the fault recorder data was analyzed for Short-Circuit current. The RMS of Short-Circuit current decaying fundamental frequency component, DC component and the attenuation time constant was obtained by Fourier transform, extrapolating with the exponential function. Finally, Corresponding suggestions for grid operation and management were also proposed.
