  • Inclusion of Short Duration Wind Variations in Economic Load Dispatch
IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, 2012
    Co-Authors: Sanjoy Roy
    Abstract:

Randomness of wind speed around a Short-Duration-stable mean value is commonly referred to as Short Duration wind variation. This paper investigates the effect of substantial wind-based capacity inclusion on optimal load dispatch, with the source wind susceptible to Short Duration variations. Analytical formulation of the economic load dispatch (ELD) problem inclusive of wind power generation is presented separately for cases with and without representation of transmission losses. In each formulation, the effect of Short Duration wind variations is included as an aggregate, thereby avoiding the complexity of stochastic models. Three-generator and 20-generator study cases are discussed to illustrate two distinct aspects of the ELD problem. First, the optimal cost, losses, and system- λ are presented across a range of Short-Duration-stable mean wind speed. Thereafter, the sensitivity of all three metrics is discussed with reference to different levels of Short Duration wind variations.

  • Impact of Short Duration Wind Variations on Output of a Pitch Angle Controlled Turbine
IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, 2012
    Co-Authors: Sanjoy Roy
    Abstract:

The distorted output of a pitch angle controlled (PAC) horizontal axis turbine, as influenced by Short Duration wind variations like turbulence and gusts, is analyzed under the assumption of two-parameter Weibull statistics. The well accepted concept of turbulence intensity is used as a parametric measure of Short Duration wind variations. Analytical expressions are formulated and used to estimate the Short Duration aggregate power output from a turbine, together with the fractional deviations from corresponding ideal zero-turbulence values. Operating conditions of constant turbulence intensity, and constant wind speed standard deviation, are considered separately for the studies. Sensitivity of turbine output power to cut-in and rated values of wind speed are evaluated and discussed.

  • Character and Distribution of Short-Duration Precipitation in Southeast Gansu,China
    Journal of Desert Research, 2013
    Co-Authors: Zhang Li-yang
    Abstract:

In this paper, the character of the Short-Duration precipitation in the southeast Gansu were analyzed using hourly precipitation data in 2009-2010 and daily precipitation data during 1971-2000 in Gansu province. The main precipitation time section concentrates from April to September and precipitation during the period accounts for more than 80%.Precipitation rapidly increases from northwest to southeast in the studied area, but on the other hand, the high and low centers more than other districts on the plateau, probably caused by plateau terrain and monsoon. The Short-Duration precipitation have their maximum values around late-afternoon,but with the precipitation Duration increase, the maximum values gradually move to early morning and the amplitude decreases. The Short-Duration precipitation accounts for the maximum proportion not only for frequency but also for contribution to total precipitation. The 40.3% of precipitation processes belong to Short-Duration precipitation even more than 90% for some stations. In a word, the Short-Duration precipitation is an important precipitation type. The 19.4% of Short-Duration precipitation is heavy precipitation, also proved that Short-Duration heavy precipitation is an important part of Short-Duration precipitation.Analysis of the diurnal variation of Short-Duration precipitation events shows that the frequency reaches the maximum value toward evening and the second highest value at midnight. In addition,we find that the precipitation-concentration degree is quite large, basically above the 0.6,precipitation-concentration period mostly located in July and August.

  • Influence of Trend on Short Duration Design Storms
    Water Resources Management, 2009
Co-Authors: Jan Adamowski, Kaz Adamowski, John Bougadis
    Abstract:

Design storms (DS) that are determined from intensity-Duration-frequency (IDF) relationships are required in many water resources engineering applications. Short Duration DS are of particular importance in municipal applications. In this paper, linear trends were estimated for different combinations of Durations and frequencies (return periods) of annual Short-Duration extreme rainfall. Numerical analysis was performed for 15 meteorological stations from the province of Ontario, Canada. The estimated magnitude (rate mm/h) and direction of trend (increasing, decreasing, or no trend) were estimated and then used to quantify the effect of trend on the frequency of design storms. Significant trends were detected for all Durations. It was determined that due to the existence of trends (which might be attributed to climate change), the design storms of a given Duration might occur more frequently in the future by approximately as much as 36 years depending on the Duration and return period. • Error masking method based on the Short-Duration offline test
    Microprocessors and Microsystems, 2017
Co-Authors: Jan Bělohoubek, Petr Fiser, Jan Schmidt
    Abstract:

Abstract The method proposed in this article allows to construct error-masking fail-operational systems by combining time and area redundancy. In such a system, error detection is performed online, while error masking is achieved by a Short-Duration offline test. The time penalty caused by the offline test applies only when an error is detected. The error-masking ability in such a system is very close to TMR, the area overhead is smaller for a well defined class of circuits, and the delay penalty caused by the offline test remains reasonably small. The Short-Duration offline test is possible only when extensive design-for-test practices are used. Therefore, a novel gate structure is presented, which allows to construct combinational circuits testable by a Short-Duration offline test. The proposed test offers complete fault coverage with respect to the stuck-on and stuck-open fault model. The proposed solutions are combined and a comprehensive description of the overall error-masking architecture is provided.

  • DSD - Error Correction Method Based on the Short-Duration Offline Test
2016 Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design (DSD), 2016
Co-Authors: Jan Belohoubek, Petr Fier, Jan Schmidt
    Abstract:

  • marked exacerbation of orthostatic intolerance after long vs Short Duration spaceflight in veteran astronauts
    Psychosomatic Medicine, 2001
Co-Authors: Janice V. Meck, Carlos J Reyes, Sondra A Perez, Ary L Goldberger, Michael G. Ziegler
    Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of postflight orthostatic intolerance after Short-Duration spaceflight is about 20%. However, the incidence after long-Duration spaceflight was unknown. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that orthostatic intolerance is more severe after long-Duration than after Short-Duration flight. METHODS: We performed tilt tests on six astronauts before and after long-Duration (129-190 days) spaceflights and compared these data with data obtained during stand tests before and after previous Short-Duration missions. RESULTS: Five of the six astronauts studied became presyncopal during tilt testing after long-Duration flights. Only one had become presyncopal during stand testing after Short-Duration flights. We also compared the long-Duration flight tilt test data to tilt test data from 20 different astronauts who flew on the Short-Duration Shuttle missions that delivered and recovered the astronauts to and from the Mir Space Station. Five of these 20 astronauts became presyncopal on landing day. Heart rate responses to tilt were no different between astronauts on long-Duration flights and astronauts on Short-Duration flights, but long-Duration subjects had lower stroke volumes and cardiac outputs than Short-Duration presyncopal subjects, suggesting a possible decrease in cardiac contractile function. One subject had subnormal norepinephrine release with upright posture after the long flight but not after the Short flight. Plasma volume losses were not greater after long flights. CONCLUSION: Long-Duration spaceflight markedly increases orthostatic intolerance, probably with multiple contributing factors.
