  • learning and acting in project situations through a meta method map a case study contextual and Situational Approach for project management governance in management education
International Journal of Project Management, 2008
    Co-Authors: Christophe Bredillet
    Abstract:

Abstract The paper introduces the underlying principles and the general features of a meta-method (MAP method) developed as part of and used in various research, education and professional development programmes at ESC Lille. This method aims at providing effective and efficient structure and process for acting and learning in various complex, uncertain and ambiguous managerial situations (projects, programmes, portfolios). The paper is developed around three main parts. First, I suggest revisiting the dominant vision of the project management knowledge field, based on the assumptions they are not addressing adequately current business and management contexts and situations, and that competencies in management of entrepreneurial activities are the sources of creation of value for organisations. Then, grounded on the former developments, I introduce the underlying concepts supporting MAP method seen as a ‘convention generator’ and how this meta-method inextricably links learning and practice in addressing managerial situations. Finally, I briefly describe an example of application, illustrating with a case study how the method integrates Project Management Governance, and give few examples of use in Management Education and Professional Development.

    Abstract:

The paper introduces the underlying principles and the general features of a meta-method (MAP method – Management & Analysis of Projects) developed as part of and used in various research, education and professional development programmes at ESC Lille. This method aims at providing effective and efficient structure and process for acting and learning in various complex, uncertain and ambiguous managerial situations (projects, programmes, portfolios). The paper is organized in three parts. In a first part, I propose to revisit the dominant vision of the project management knowledge field, based on the assumptions they are not addressing adequately current business and management contexts and situations, and that competencies in management of entrepreneurial activities are the sources of creation of value for organisations. Then, grounded on the new suggested perspective, the second part presents the underlying concepts supporting MAP method seen as a ‘convention generator' and how this meta-method inextricably links learning and practice in addressing managerial situations. The third part describes example of application, illustrating with a brief case study how the method integrates Project Management Governance, and gives few examples of use in Management Education and Professional Development.

  • Project management governance: A Situational Approach
    Science & Engineering Faculty, 2004
    Co-Authors: Christophe Bredillet
    Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to show how project management governance is addressed through the use of a specific meta-method. Governance is defined here on two criteria: accountability and performance. Accountability is promoted through transparency and performance is promoted by responsive and responsible decision-making. According to a systemic perspective, transparency and decision-making involve having information, tacit or explicit knowledge, as well as understanding of the context, the different parameters and variables, their interaction and conditions of change. Although this method of methods was built according a heuristic process involving 25 years of various researches and consulting activities, it seems appropriate to draw its foundations. I clarify first my epistemological position and the notion of project and project management, as Art and Science. This lead me to define a "Be" / "Have" posture to this regards. Then, the main theoretical roots of MAP Method are exposed: Boisot' s Social Learning Cycle, Praxeology and Theory of Convention. Then we introduced the main characteristics of the method and the 17 methods and tools constituting MAP "tool box", thus with regard to the project management governance perspective. Finally, I discuss the integration of two managerial modes (operational and project modes) and the consequence in term of governance in a specific socio-techno-economic project/context ecosystem.

  • The effects of selective evaluation on the perception of female cues in sexually coercive and noncoercive males
    Archives of Sexual Behavior, 1993
    Co-Authors: Mary E. Craig Shea
    Abstract:

Various models have been proposed by which to understand the phenomenon of sexual coercion within dating relationships. Two are reviewed, including the limitations of each. A third, the Situational Approach, is outlined as more comprehensive in understanding the problem. One aspect of the model, selective evaluation, is experimentally tested. One-hundred eighty-two college students participated in brief heterosexual interactions and rated each other's behavior in terms of sexual expressiveness, flattery, and interest in future interactions. Behavioral data were also collected to evaluate differences between groups and the role behavioral cues play in the expression and attribution of sexual interest. Results support the hypothesis of selective evaluation in men, and in sexually coercive men in particular. Results are discussed with regard to socialization processes, communication of sexual interest, and recommendations for future research.

  • The influence of sex stereotypes and gender roles on participation and performance in sport and exercise: Review and future directions
Psychology of Sport and Exercise, 2013
Co-Authors: Aïna Chalabaev, Philippe Sarrazin, Paul Fontayne, Julie Boiché, Corentin Clément-guillotin
    Abstract:

The role of sex stereotypes and gender roles in the sex differences observed in sport and exercise has been extensively investigated in sport psychology, past studies showing that stereotypes are internalized into the self during the socialization process. Although this research has provided clear evidence of the psychosocial roots of sex differences in athletics, focusing exclusively on an internalization explanation may not allow a complete understanding of the influence of stereotypes in this domain. This article presents two Approaches that have been developed in mainstream psychology and discusses their relevance in sport psychology: (1) the Situational Approach, which considers that the mere presence of stereotypes in the environment is sufficient to affect individuals (e.g., stereotype threat theory); (2) the content of stereotypes Approach (e.g., stereotype content model), which suggests that stereotypes about a particular group may be ambivalent, and that this ambivalence may serve to legitimize the status quo.

  • A Situational Approach TO STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING OF REGIONAL AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
    Russian Journal of Management, 2013
Co-Authors: Александр Аркадьевич Савченко, Alexander Savchenko
    Abstract:

Through a Situational Approach to strategic management of regional and urban development it is possible to identify the interaction between the managerial process and mechanism; to bring together the spatial and activity-related concepts of territorial development; and to explain the phenomenon in question from both general and specific perspectives. Territorial development is becoming the principal object of strategic management of a region or a city, its key tool being the utilization of its own good practices. The main objective of territorial development is increasing the capacity for constructive interaction between all its “actors and factors”. In this situation, monitoring of territorial development is seen as an integral part of management. It ensures the inventory, observation, and comparison of various trends determining the situation, as well as the results of actions aimed at its targeted alteration. Monitoring helps not only to promptly identify threats, but also to detect the opportunities for developing the situation in the desired directions within the “natural” trends of its dynamics. The Situational Approach to the monitoring of regional and urban development presented in the article was implemented in the development of the Strategy for the Socioeconomic Development of the City of Moscow until 2015 (as commissioned by the Department of Economic Policy and Development of the Government of Moscow) by an international team headed by the experts of Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration and Higher School of Economics.
