Effect of 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser on invasiveness and innate immune response in keratinocytes infected with Candida albicans

Common therapeutic options for fungal infections are topical or systemic antifungal drugs. Recently, in cutaneous pathologies, lasers and light-based treatments have emerged showing few contraindications and minimal side effects. The Q-switched (Nd-YAG) laser at a wavelength of 1064 nm has been shown to be useful in dermatology, dentistry, and some other medical specialties. It is used to treat onychomycoses, warts, and wounds and in some other treatments. We analyzed the effect of Q-switched (Nd-YAG) laser 1064 nm on human keratinocytes infected with C. albicans. In particular, we evaluated the effect of laser on invasiveness of C. albicans and on inflammatory and protective response of HaCaT cells infected. The results obtained did not show inhibitory, fungicidal, or fungistatic effects of laser on yeast; in addition, laser did not affect HaCaT vitality. HaCaT cells infected with C. albicans and irradiated with laser showed a reduction of invasiveness of TNF-α and IL8 gene expression and an increase of immunomodulatory cytokines such as TGFβ. Furthermore, laser induces a significant over-expression of HSP70B (heat shock protein) and of HBD-2 (Human β defensin-2) in HaCaT infected with C. albicans , compared to the untreated control. The use of Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in Skin mycosis caused by C. albicans reduces yeast invasiveness in keratinocytes, downregulates inflammatory activities, and facilitates cytoprotection and antimicrobial defense. Our results offer a promising therapeutic strategy in the management of Skin Candidiasis, also in combination with conventional therapies.

clinical observation of sertaconazole nitrate cream in treatment of Skin Candidiasis in children
Chinese Journal of Mycology, 2012Co-Authors: W U QifuAbstract:Objective To evaluate clinical efficacy and safety of sertaconazole nitrate cream in the treatment of children's Skin Candidiasis(moniliasis).Methods One hundred patients were enrolled in the test and were divided into 2 groups.Sertaconazole nitrate cream was applied topically to the affected areas of the body twice daily for 14 days in the treatment group.Miconazole nitrate ointment was applied topically to the affected areas of the body twice daily for 14 days in the control group.The efficacy and the adverse reaction were observed.Result Treatment group's curative rate is 92.00% and control group's 64.00%(P0.01).Compared with the control group,the treatment group produced the effect more quickly with a shorter cured period(P0.01).There was little adverse effect observed in the test.Conclusion Sertaconazole nitrate cream acts effectively and safely on children's Skin Candidiasis.It is worthy of application.

Both of them were infants at the age of 4 months and lesions of erythema mycoticum infantile (Beck) seemed to have spread to involve the head. This Skin condition is considered to be caused or modified from the original lesion by application of topical corticosteroid preparations or a recent long-hair tendency among infants. In literature, only Nakajima et al. (1977) and Tokuda et al. (1980) reported 1 and 2 similar cases, respectively, but further increase in the number of patients is expected. Zusammenfassung: 2 klinische Falle von kerionahnlicher Candidiasis an der Kopfhaut wurden berichtet. Die beiden Kranken sind 4 Monate alte Sauglinge. Es schien sich urn eine Erweiterung des Hautausschlags vom Typ Erythema mycoticum infantile (Beck) zu handeln. Als Ursache bzw. Auslosung der Verschlimmerung kann eine Abanderung der eigentlichen klinischen Symptomatik durch die lokale Anwendung von Kortikosteroiden oder die Tatsache, das manche Kleinkinder heute lange Haare haben, angenommen werden. In der Literatur stehen ein ahnlicher Fall von Nakajima et al. (1977) und 2 Falle von Tokuda et al. (1980), also insgesamt nur 3 Falle. Es ist aber anzunehmen, das die Haufigkeit der Erkrankung kunftig noch zunehmen wird.
