  • Security and privacy challenges in Smart cities
    Sustainable Cities and Society, 2018
Co-Authors: Trevor Braun, Farkhund Iqbal, Benjamin C. M. Fung, Babar Shah
    Abstract:

The construction of Smart cities will bring about a higher quality of life to the masses through digital interconnectivity, leading to increased efficiency and accessibility in cities. Smart cities must ensure individual privacy and security in order to ensure that its citizens will participate. If citizens are reluctant to participate, the core advantages of a Smart city will dissolve. This article will identify and offer possible solutions to five Smart city challenges, in hopes of anticipating destabilizing and costly disruptions. The challenges include privacy preservation with high dimensional data, securing a Network with a large attack surface, establishing trustworthy data sharing practices, properly utilizing artificial intelligence, and mitigating failures cascading through the Smart Network. Finally, further research directions are provided to encourage further exploration of Smart city challenges before their construction.

  • Smart Network Slicing for Vehicular Fog-RANs
IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2019
Co-Authors: Kai Xiong, Supeng Leng, Jie Hu, Xiaosha Chen, Kun Yang
    Abstract:

Modern transportation systems are facing a sharp alteration since the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has activated intense information exchange among vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians. Existing approaches fail in efficiently handling the heterogeneous Network traffic because of the complicated Network environment and dynamic vehicle density. Recently, the fog-radio access Network with Network slicing has emerged as a promising solution to fulfill the demands of the maldistributed Network traffic. However, available fog resources as well as Network traffic are all dynamic and unpredictable due to high mobility of vehicles, which results in weak resource utilization. To address this problem, we propose a Smart slice scheduling scheme in vehicular fog radio access Networks. This scheduling scheme is formed as a Markov decision process. Accordingly, an intelligent algorithm for Network slices is proposed based on the Monte Carlo tree search in terms of a new metric cross entropy, which is able to allocate the resource allocation for the match of traffic load in the time-space domain. This slice scheduling algorithm does not require any prior knowledge of the Network traffic. Furthermore, this paper first reveals the relationship between road traffic and the IoV resource based on the metric perception-reaction time. A collaborative scheduling scheme is proposed to tune the road traffic speed to further release available IoV resource under the heavy traffic load. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms several baselines in terms of throughput and delay with low complexity.

  • A SDN-based active measurement method to traffic QoS sensing for Smart Network access
    Wireless Networks, 2020
Co-Authors: Chuan Liu, Gang Zhang, Jing Tao, Dingde Jiang
    Abstract:

Power communication Network is very important for the management of the power system. With the exponential growth of the power equipment and the drastic increase in the amount of power monitoring data, there is a huge challenge for the Smart Network access of the power communication Network. Then, software defined Network (SDN) which is flexible and scalable is suitable for the power communication Network. In order to increase the high quality of service (QoS) of provided communication for users, the traffic QoS sensing is the key of the Smart Network access in the power communication Network. Then, we propose a SDN-Based active measurement method to measure the evaluation parameters of the Smart Network access in the power communication Network. Firstly, we introduce the instructions provided by the OpenFlow protocol, which can be used to collect statistics from OpenFlow switches. Secondly, we define the parameters that should be measured in the power communication Network to evaluate the performance of the Network and give the corresponding measurement method with them. Next, we proposed a SDN-based active measurement algorithm that updates its measurement interval based on the measurement throughput changes. Finally, we built a simulation platform using the Mininet simulator and the POX controller to verify the proposed measurement method, and the simulation results show the accuracy of our proposed method and the measurement load of our proposed method are both better than that of Polling measurement methods.

  • building a remote supervisory control Network system for Smart home applications
    Systems Man and Cybernetics, 2006
Co-Authors: Yuping Tsou, Junwei Hsieh, Chengting Lin, Chunyu Chen
    Abstract:

Wireless sensor Networks are often found in the fields of home security, industrial control and maintenance, medical assistance and traffic monitoring and the appearance of ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 indicates a Network system which is highly reliable, cost-effective, low power consumption, programmable and fast establishing. Currently, many of the wireless sensor Network systems are now using ZigBee to implement the designs. A Smart sensor Network is the infrastructure of home automation and supervisory control systems, as the proposed functions such as intelligence entrance guard's management, home security, environmental monitor and light control can be implemented by a Smart Network integrating with multimedia access service, image processing, security, and sensor and control technologies. Details of the development process of a Smart home Network in Taiwan based on ZigBee technology with the combination of Smart home appliance communication protocol, SAANet, will be given in this article.
