    Abstract:

    The specification and monitoring of conditional obligations and prohibitions with starting points and deadlines is a crucial aspect in the design of open interaction systems. In this paper we regard such obligations and prohibitions as cases of Social Commitment, and propose to model them in OWL, the logical language recommended by the W3C for Semantic Web applications. In particular we propose an application-independent ontology of the notions of Social Commitment, temporal proposition, event, agent, role and norms that can be used in the specification of any open interaction system. We then delineate a hybrid solution that uses the OWL ontology, SWRL rules, and a Java program to dynamically monitor or simulate the temporal evolution of Social Commitments, due to the elapsing of time and to the actions performed by the agents interacting within the system.

    As part of the goal of developing a genuinely open multiagent system, many efforts are devoted to the definition of a standard Agent Communication Language (ACL). The aim of this paper is to propose a logical framework for the definition of ACL semantics based upon the concept of (Social) Commitment. We assume that agent communication should be analyzed in terms of communicative acts, by means of which agents create and manipulate Commitments, provided certain contextual conditions hold. We propose formal definitions of such actions in the context of a temporal logic that extends CTL' with past-directed temporal operators. In the system we propose, called CTL ± , time is assumed to be discrete, with no start or end point, and branching in the future. CTL ± is then extended to represent actions and Commitments; in particular, we formally define the conditions under which a Commitment is fulfilled or violated. Finally, we show how our logic of Commitment can be used to define the semantics of an ACL.

    Abstract:

    We propose a method for the definition of interaction protocols to be used in open multiagent systems. Starting from the assumption that language is the fundamental component of every interaction, we first propose a semantics for Agent Communication Languages based on the notion of Social Commitment, and then use it to define the meaning of a set of basic communicative acts. Second, we propose a verifiable and application-independent method for the definition of interaction protocols, whose main component is the specification of an interaction diagram specifying which actions may be performed by agents under given conditions. Interaction protocols fully rely on the application-independent meaning of communicative acts. We also propose a set of soundness conditions that can be used to verify whether a protocol is reasonable. Finally, our approach is exemplified by the definition of an interaction protocol for English auctions.

    Abstract:

    Service-learning, which combines academic study with community service, is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. It is ideally suited to achieving both the personal and academic goals of students and the broader goals of civic responsibility and Social justice. This paper describes the design of a local service-learning program the author implemented at a university in Hong Kong. Based on survey data collected from 93 university student participants in the program, it illustrates the impact of service-learning on student outcomes. Results show that the majority of the students benefitted as follows: (1) By developing personal autonomy through real world experiences, students develop a recognition of and faith in their potential. It enhances self-assurance, assumption of new responsibilities, and achievement of individual growth. (2) Students move toward becoming responsible citizens and agents of Social change. By learning to care for deprived groups in the community, they are assuming meaningful roles and responding to real issues in ways that have a long-lasting impact on their own lives. Recommendations, based on the shortcomings we have witnessed and the changes we have implemented, are also made.

    Abstract:

    This research addresses the general foundations of the importance and Social need for the development of professional ways of action related to the Security and Defense of the Cuban nation, in the initial training process of the Preschool Education professional. This training responds to that of an educator who provides comprehensive educational care to children from 0-6 years of age, for which the comprehensive preparation of the professionals of this career is required, committed to the future progress of the country and to the solution, through their personal and professional initiatives, of the problems that arise in their sphere of action. Its objective is the elaboration of systematic actions, contextualized to the object of the profession for the integration of knowledge of the Discipline Preparation for Defense with the rest of the career that allow the development of professional performance ways in initial training process of the graduate in Preschool Education. All this through the implementation of the Preparation for Defense strategy and the development of scientific-methodological work in terms of strengthening these ways of action. The results achieved in the students of the Bachelor's Degree in Preschool Education of the University of Las Tunas, where the research was applied, were satisfactory, which is reflected in their ways of professional performance, ascertained in a strong scientific-technical preparation and solid development of their ethical, professional and moral values tinged by a high Social Commitment to the defense of the country.La presente investigación aborda fundamentos generales de la importancia y necesidad Social del desarrollo de modos de actuación profesional relacionados con la Seguridad y la Defensa de la nación cubana, en el proceso de formación inicial del profesional de la Educación Preescolar. Esta formación responde a la de un educador que brinda atención educativa integral a niños de 0-6 años, para ello se requiere de la preparación integral de los profesionales de esta carrera, comprometidos con el progreso futuro del país y con la solución, a través de sus iniciativas personales y profesionales, de los problemas que se les presenten en su esfera de actuación. Tiene como objetivo la elaboración de acciones sistemáticas, contextualizadas al objeto de la profesión para la integración de saberes de la Disciplina Preparación para la Defensa con las restantes de la carrera que permitan el desarrollo de modos de actuación profesional en el proceso de formación inicial del licenciado en Educación Preescolar. Todo ello a través de la implementación de la estrategia de Preparación para la Defensa y el desarrollo del trabajo científico-metodológico en función del fortalecimiento de dichos modos de actuación. Los resultados alcanzados en los estudiantes de la licenciatura en Educación Preescolar de la Universidad de Las Tunas, donde fue aplicada la investigación, fueron satisfactorios, lo que se refleja en sus modos de actuación profesional, constatados en una fuerte preparación científico- técnica y sólido desarrollo de sus valores éticos, profesionales y morales matizados por un elevado compromiso Social ante la defensa del país

    Abstract:

    Globally, the population of elderly people is rising with an increasing number of people living with dementias. This trend is coupled with a prevailing need for compassionate caretakers. A key challenge in dementia care is to assist the person to sustain communication and connection to family, caregivers and the environment. The use of Social Commitment robots in the care of people with dementia has intriguing possibilities to address some of these care needs. This paper discusses the literature on the use of Social Commitment robots in the care of elderly people with dementia; the contributions to care that Social Commitment robots potentially can make and the cautions around their use. Future directions for programs of research are identified to further the development of the evidence-based knowledge in this area.
