    Abstract:

    Social Computing, as the technical foundation of future computational smart societies, has the potential to improve the effectiveness of open-source big data usage, systematically integrate a variety of elements including time, human, resources, scenarios, and organizations in the current cyber-physical-Social world, and establish a novel Social structure with fair information, equal rights, and a flat configuration. Meanwhile, considering the big modeling gap between the model world and the physical world, the concept of parallel intelligence is introduced. With the help of software-defined everything, parallel intelligence bridges the big modeling gap by means of constructing artificial systems where computational experiments can be implemented to verify Social policies, economic strategies, and even military operations. Artificial systems play the role of “Social laboratories” in which decisions are computed before they are executed in our physical society. Afterwards, decisions with the expected outputs are executed in parallel in both the artificial and physical systems to interactively sense, compute, evaluate and adjust system behaviors in real-time, leading system behaviors in the physical system converging to those proven to be optimal in the artificial ones. Thus, the smart guidance and management for our society can be achieved.

Over the past decades, Social software from email to blogs, has fundamentally changed how to live, work and interact with each other.

This special issue highlights a variety of PCS applications, such as smart firefighting, intelligent infrastructure, and user guidance in an airport.

    People are on the verge of an era in which the human experience can be enriched in ways they couldn't have imagined two decades ago. Rather than depending on a single technology, people progressed with several whose semantics-empowered convergence and integration will enable us to capture, understand, and reapply human knowledge and intellect. Such capabilities will consequently elevate our technological ability to deal with the abstractions, concepts, and actions that characterize human experiences. This will herald Computing for human experience (CHE). The CHE vision is built on a suite of technologies that serves, assists, and cooperates with humans to nondestructively and unobtrusively complement and enrich normal activities, with minimal explicit concern or effort on the humans' part. CHE will anticipate when to gather and apply relevant knowledge and intelligence. It will enable human experiences that are intertwined with the physical, conceptual, and experiential worlds (emotions, sentiments, and so on), rather than immerse humans in cyber worlds for a specific task. Instead of focusing on humans interacting with a technology or system, CHE will feature technology-rich human surroundings that often initiate interactions. Interaction will be more sophisticated and seamless compared to today's precursors such as automotive accident-avoidance systems. Many components of and ideas associated with the CHE vision have been around for a while. Here, the author discuss some of the most important tipping points that he believe will make CHE a reality within a decade.

    Abstract:

    Service process orchestration using workflow technologies have led to significant improvements in generating predicable outcomes by automating tedious manual tasks but suffer from challenges related to the flexibility required in work especially when humans are involved. Recently emerging trends in enterprises to explore Social Computing concepts have realized value in more agile work process orchestrations but tend to be less predictable with respect to outcomes. In this paper we use IT services management, specifically, incident management for large scale systems, to investigate the interplay of workflow systems and Social Computing. We apply a recently introduced concept of Social Compute Units, and flexible teams sourced based on various parameters such as skills, availability, incident urgency, etc. in the context of resolution of incidents in an IT service provider organization. Results from simulation-based experiments indicate that the combination of SCUs and workflow based processes can lead to significant improvement in key service delivery outcomes, with average resolution time per incident and number of SLO violations being at times as low as 52.7% and 27.3% respectively of the corresponding values for pure workflow based incident management.

    Social Computing is actively shaping Internet-based business models. Scalability and effectiveness of collective intelligence are becoming increasingly attractive to investors. However, to fully exploit this potential we still have to develop crowd-management frameworks capable of supporting rich collaboration models, smart task division and virtual careers. An important step in this direction is the development of models of rewarding/incentivizing processes. In this paper, we conceptualize and represent rewarding and incentive mechanisms for Social business processes. Our techniques enable definition, composition, execution and monitoring of rewarding mechanisms in a generic way.
