  • The Transformation of Social Integration Model in China's Urban Areas
Journal of Nanjing Normal University, 2000
    Co-Authors: Yin Jing-sheng
    Abstract:

The role of work units was prominent in China's urban Social Integration under the planning system. Since the reforms, the old Social Integration model has faced a lot of challenge by the force of market. The urban Social Integration mechanisms have changed from singular administrative to multiple contractual Integration, involving such factors as market, law, intermediate organization and community, which continue to play increasingly important role in urban Social Integration.

It was a descriptive study with survey methodology. The universe of the research consisted of the students studying at secondary schools in Mardin city center during 2016-2017 educational year. The sample included four distinctive schools and the participants were randomly selected among Imam Hatip High Schools, Anatolian High Schools, Science High Schools and Vocational and Technical High Schools. • Residential segregation and perceptions of Social Integration in Shanghai, China
    Urban Studies, 2017
    Co-Authors: Youqin Huang, Wenhong Zhang
    Abstract:

With ongoing urban revolution, Chinese cities are experiencing an influx of migrants, whose Integration into urban society becomes an unprecedented challenge. Using a recent survey in Shanghai and adopting a multilevel multinomial logistic model, this paper studies perceptions of Social Integration, comparing local residents with migrants. While migrants and local residents have very different perceptions of Social Integration, both individual-level factors and community-level factors such as residential segregation shape perceptions of Social Integration, and they shape migrants and local residents differently. In particular, residential segregation, especially migrant population size, tends to reinforce perceptions of Social exclusion, which imposes challenges on Social Integration.

  • How Neighborhood Poverty Structures Types and Levels of Social Integration.
American journal of community psychology, 2015
Co-Authors: Andrea Fleisch Marcus, Sandra E Echeverria, Bart K Holland, Ana F Abraido-lanza, Marian R Passannante
    Abstract:

Social Integration is fundamental to health and well-being. However, few studies have explored how neighborhood contexts pattern types and levels of Social Integration that individuals experience. We examined how neighborhood poverty structures two dimensions of Social Integration: Integration with neighbors and Social Integration more generally. Using data from the United States Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we linked study participants to percent poverty in their neighborhood of residence (N = 16,040). Social Integration was assessed using a modified Social Network Index and neighborhood Integration based on yearly visits with neighbors. We fit multivariate logistic regression models that accounted for the complex survey design. Living in high poverty neighborhoods was associated with lower Social Integration but higher visits with neighbors. Neighborhood poverty distinctly patterns Social Integration, demonstrating that contexts shape the extent and quality of Social relationships.

  • Civil war, Social Integration and mental health in Croatia.
Journal of health and social behavior, 1999
Co-Authors: Robert M. Kunovich, Randy Hodson
    Abstract:

Research has shown that Social relationships are generally beneficial for mental health (Thoits 1995). However, few scholars have examined this association after the occurrence of a significant shock to the Social system as a whole. The purpose of this article is to examine the relationship between Social Integration and war-related distress in Croatia immediately following the recent civil war. Does Social Integration decrease war-related distress? Does Social Integration buffer the effect of traumatic events on war-related distress? We analyze these questions using nationally representative survey data collected in Croatia in 1996. Results suggest that Social Integration has both positive and negative direct effects on distress. Being a member of informal organizations, such as sports clubs, and participating in Social activities are beneficial for mental health. On the other hand, being a member of some formal organizations, such as church organizations and unions, is detrimental to mental health. There is little support for the idea that Social Integration buffers the effect of traumatic events on distress. Only one of thirty-six possible interactions is significant and supports the buffer hypothesis. Frequent participation in Social activities buffers the effect of experiencing violence on war-related distress. Also, some forms of Social Integration appear to aggravate the effect of traumatic events on war-related distress. In sum, Social Integration does affect war-related distress after a system shock, but in complex and sometimes unexpected ways. Language: en
