  • more on the effectiveness of public spending on health care and education a covariance structure model
    Journal of International Development, 2003
Co-Authors: Emanuele Baldacci, Maria Teresa Guinsiu, Luiz R De Mello
    Abstract:

Using data for a sample of developing countries and transition economies, this paper estimates the relationship between government spending on health care and education and selected Social indicators. Unlike previous studies, where Social indicators are used as proxies for the unobservable health and education status of the population, this paper estimates a latent variable model. The findings suggest that public spending is an important determinant of Social outcomes, particularly in the education sector. Overall, the latent variable approach yields better estimates of a Social Production function than the traditional approach, with higher elasticities of Social indicators with respect to income and spending, therefore providing stronger evidence that increases in public spending do have a positive impact on Social outcomes. Unlike previous studies, where Social indicators are used as proxies for the unobservable health and education status of the population, this paper estimates a latent variable model. The findings suggest that public Social spending is an important determinant of Social indicators, particularly in the education sector. Overall, the latent variable approach was found to yield more adequate estimates of Social Production functions, with larger elasticities of Social indicators with respect to income and spending on education than the traditional approach, providing stronger evidence that increases in public spending have a positive impact on Social indicators. The study also finds that the millennium goal of universal primary education enrollment by 2015 could be achieved through an increase by one-third, on average, in education spending.

  • spatializing culture the Social Production and Social construction of public space in costa rica
    American Ethnologist, 1996
    Co-Authors: Setha M Low
    Abstract:

In this article I explore how an integrated approach to the anthropological study of urban space would work ethnographically. I discuss four areas of spatial/cultural analysis—historical emergence, sociopolitical and economic structuring, patterns of Social use, and experiential meanings—as a means of working out of the methodological implications of broader Social construction theoretical perspectives. Two plazas in San Jose, Costa Rica, furnish ethnographic illustrations of the Social mediating processes of spatial practices, symbolic meaning, and Social control that provide insight into the conflicts that arise as different groups and sociopolitical forces struggle to claim and define these culturally significant public spaces. • the effects of group composition on decision quality in a Social Production community
International Conference on Supporting Group Work, 2010
Co-Authors: Shyong K Lam, Jawed Karim, John Riedl
    Abstract:

Online Social Production communities allow efficient construction of valuable and high-quality information sources. To be successful, community members must be effective at collaboration, including makink collective decisions in the presence of disagreement. We examined over 100,000 decisions made by small working groups in Wikipedia, and analyzed how decision quality in these online groups is influenced by four group composition factors: the size of the group, how members were invited to the group, the prior experience of group members, and apparent bias shown by the group administrator. Our findings lead us to recommendations for designers of Social Production communities.
