    Abstract:

    Contemporary calls for collecting, preserving, and repurposing huge stores of digital Social Science Data within “cyberinfrastructure” are not entirely new. Similar sentiments decades ago motivated the development of what came to be known by the late 1960s as “Social Science Data archives” or SSDAs. These information infrastructures promised a systematized solution to the problem of making Social activity visible and intelligible to Social Science researchers, while relying on the long work hours, creative insights, and collegial collaboration of a hidden network of Social Data curators. This chapter describes how some of these Data curators came together in the late 1970s to form a new professional organization called the International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology, or IASSIST—not only to make their own collective Data curation work more visible but also to make the Social Science Data archives themselves more sustainable. Building this professional identity and peer network was a crucial, voluntary, and undervalued labor challenge, essential to advertising the existence, circulating the products, disseminating the best practices, and realizing the value proposition of the SSDAs themselves.

    Abstract:

    As public investment in archiving research Data grows, there has been increasing attention to the longevity or sustainability of the Data repositories that curate such Data. While there have been many conceptual frameworks developed and case reports of individual archives and digital repositories, there have been few empirical studies of how such archives persist over time. In this paper, we draw upon organizational studies theories to approach the issue of sustainability from an organizational perspective, focusing specifically on the organizational histories of three Social Science Data archives (SSDA): ICPSR, UKDA, and LIS. Using a framework of organizational resilience to understand how archives perceive crisis, respond to it, and learn from experience, this article reports on an empirical study of sustainability in these long-lived SSDAs. The study draws from archival documents and interviews to examine how sustainability can and should be conceptualized as on-going processes over time and not as a quality at a single moment. Implications for research and practice in Data archive sustainability are discussed.

    Abstract:

    We map out a new arena of analysis for knowledge and cyberinfrastructure scholars: Social Science Data Archives (SSDA). SSDA have influenced the international development of the Social Sciences, research methods, and Data standards in the latter half of the twentieth century. They provide entry points to understand how fields organise themselves to be ‘Data intensive’. Longitudinal studies of SSDA can increase our understanding of the sustainability of knowledge infrastructure more generally. We argue for special attention to the following themes: the co-shaping of Data use and users, the materiality of shifting revenue sources, field level relationships as an important component of infrastructure, and the implications of centralisation and federation of institutions and resources. We briefly describe our ongoing study of primarily quantitative Social Science Data archives. We conclude by discussing how cross-institutional and longitudinal analyses can contribute to the scholarship of knowledge infrastructure.     There has been a sizeable investment in the development of large-scale Data and appropriate infrastructures in the physical and biological Sciences and increasingly in the Social Sciences and humanities. Concerns about Data sustainability have attracted a great deal of attention as research project Data collection represents a significant investment, and loss of subsequent use of that Data represents a loss of potential value. In this poster, we focus on of the most long-lived examples of Data archives: Social Science Data Archives (SSDAs). In this study, we report on preliminary research on the historical, institutional, and operational dimensions over SSDAs over time. Drawing upon analyses of institutional and policy documents and interviews with staff, depositors, and administrators, this poster briefly discusses current challenges to SSDA longevity and implications for next steps in expanding the study both theoretically and methodologically. Initial themes discussed in this poster include Data archives making a market for themselves, configuring their products and their user base and ongoing tensions between the need to generate revenue and pressure for open access Data.

  • MULTICHANNEL SEQUENCE ANALYSIS APPLIED TO Social Science Data

    Abstract:

    Applications of optimal matching analysis in the Social Sciences are typically based on sequences of specific Social statuses that model the residential, family, or occupational trajectories of individuals. Despite the broadly recognized interdependence of these statuses, few attempts have been made to systematize the ways in which optimal matching analysis should be applied multidimensionally-that is, in an approach that takes into account multiple trajectories simultaneously. Based on methods pioneered in the field of bioinformatics, this paper proposes a method of multichannel sequence analysis (MCSA) that simultaneously extends the usual optimal matching analysis (OMA) to multiple life spheres. Using Data from the Swiss household panel (SHP), we examine the types of trajectories obtained using MCSA. We also consider a random Data set and find that MCSA offers an alternative to the sole use of ex-post sum of distance matrices by locally aligning distinct life trajectories simultaneously. Moreover, MCSA reduces the complexity of the typologies it allows to produce, without making them less informative. It is more robust to noise in the Data, and it provides more reliable alignments than two independent OMA.
