job reallocation and productivity growth in a post Socialist Economy evidence from slovenian manufacturing
Social Science Research Network, 2007Co-Authors: Jan De Loecker, Jozef KoningsAbstract:This paper studies whether job reallocation in Slovenia, a post-Socialist Economy, has been associated with gains in total factor productivity (TFP). We document the importance of entry and exit in job reallocation and show that TFP has increased mainly due to existing firms' increasing efficiency and through net entry of firms. Underlying aggregate TFP growth is job destruction by state firms and reallocation of employment to private firms.

The Rate of Profit and Crises in a Socialist Economy
Journal of The History of Economic Thought, 1995Co-Authors: Theodore P. LianosAbstract:In a recent paper (1994) in this journal, Elias L. Khalil makes two claims. First, he contends, the law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall is not unique to the capitalist mode of production but it is equally valid in a Socialist Economy. Second, a decline in the rate of profit in a Socialist Economy would engender crises as would be the case in a capitalist Economy. Even more, he argues that crises would be necessary in any social form if there is a secular tendency of the organic composition of capital to rise.

metropolitan development in a transitional Socialist Economy spatial restructuring in the pearl river delta china
Urban Studies, 2001Co-Authors: George C S LinAbstract:The dynamic of globalisation and urban change in Europe and North America has been extensively documented. Relatively little is known about the processes and consequences of spatial restructuring in metropolitan regions within the context of a transitional Socialist Economy. This study investigates economic restructuring and spatial transformation in one of the most dynamic metropolitan regions in China. Deregulation of the post-reform Socialist central state has allowed Chinese peasants to diversify agricultural production and to industrialise the rural Economy according to various personal strengths and the changing market demand. Despite the rapid commercialisation and industrialisation of the regional Economy, there has been no growing concentration of population and production facilities in large cities. The loci of accelerated economic growth, increased population mobility and massive land-use transformation have been in the intermediate zones surrounding and between metropolitan centres. Rapid expa...
