    'OpenEdition', 2019

    Abstract:

Within the frame of the spatio-temporal analysis of natural hazards, geohistory is a meaningful approach to obtain and exploit (geo)chronologies. This article formalizes a scientific approach aiming at capturing the risk system in its entirety (factors, processes, and dynamics at play). It is based on systemic analysis, already promoted by geographers, but currently little used in geohistory, and it involves four successive steps: construction of a database of events, documentation of their socio-historical and bio-physical contexts, mapping between the events and their drivers, and finally determination of a qualitative model of how the system works. These steps are discussed and illustrated using examples from the literature. The review shows that numerous chronologies have already been proposed for natural hazards, but these cannot be directly interpreted in terms of the evolution of phenomena or risks. To apprehend these, it is necessary to replace documented events in their social and bio-physical context, that is to say, to analyze the main factors that can explain the evolution of their spatial and temporal distributions. The article proposes an operational checklist for this contextualization step. Once this is done, it is possible to consider the risk system in its entirety, each of its Subsystems (the natural Subsystem and/or the Societal Subsystem), and to confront the spatial and temporal distributions of events with the evolution of potentially explanatory factors. Spatial and temporal mapping allows concomitances or offsets to be highlighted and, as a result, provides explanations for the evolutions observed. A final step that identifies the main effects at play leads to a qualitative modeling of the risk system provided through a simplified graphical representation. The latter, even if it remains for now little used in practice and may be difficult to obtain, is a reflection and communication tool that is both efficient and elegant

  • Theater in Bedrängnis
    2017
    Co-Authors: Hoffmann Judith
    Abstract:

Jahrhundert. Zu beobachten ist dabei ein massives Einwirken auf das Theatergeschehen der Stadt, aber auch umgekehrt wird die enorme Wirkung des Theaters auf die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung in der Sattelzeit (Koselleck) erkennbarThis paper focuses on the complex and multidimensional role of Madrilenian popular theatre in the last decades of the 18th century. Under the imperative of a new functional differentiation of society (Luhmann), Spanish theatre in the late 18th century experienced a process of differentiation in order to be part of art as a Societal Subsystem. This permanent process was accompanied by the implicit (and sometimes explicitly pronounced) aim of Enlightenment to exclude the populace from the theatres and turn these houses into sublime places of art appreciation. Yet, along with this process also went the sharp opposition of numerous representatives of a national baroque tradition of theatre and drama. Hence, the Madrilenian theatre of the late 18th century mirrored the predominating conflicts between neoclassical and baroque aesthetics, between the politics of Enlightenment imposed from above, and the sharp opposition rising from the bottom as well as between afrancesados and castizos. However, in the majority of cases the boundaries cannot be clearly separated. In most cases, different points of view and ideologies interweave, discourse which is apparently contradicting collocates, and seemingly fixed boundaries prove to be nothing else than permeable markers. Considering this situation, also the political, aesthetical and Societal function of theatre was multiple and multidimensional, not only concerning playwrights, but also considering the spatial concepts, organisational structures and performance practice. For different aesthetical, political and moral reasons, Madrilenian as well as Spanish theatre in general found itself in a state of oppression, as it was engrossed by different ideological and institutional forces. As the traditional comedia was replaced by neoclassical drama, also certain parts of the audience were replaced by more educated and sophisticated spectators. This process was supported by an accelerated professional training programme for actors and actresses. Simultaniously, the theatres of Madrid found themselves under tight economic conditions as well as under strong stately and ecclesiastical censorship, while also being observed permanently by press and politics. The autopoietic social system of theatre was connected with all of these parameters by structural couplings at the boundaries. During its internal renewal process it was influenced and controlled by continuous external irritations and appropriations. The sources chosen for this research paper consist of original plays, handwritten correspondence, reports and other narrations, but also decrees and regulations. All of these sources, printed or handwritten, shed light on the complex processes and appropriations of the Madrilenian popular theatre in the late 18th century mentioned above. What can be seen, is a strong influence of different institutional powers on theatrical life, but also an enormous influence of theatre on social development during the onset of modernity
