transformation models of explanation in the social sciences the utopian imagination as a resource for Sociological Theorizing
Research Papers in Economics, 2015Co-Authors: Victor Semenovich Vakhshtayn, Maria ErofeevaAbstract:The paper analyzes the potential and development of explanatory concept of "utopian imagination", the distinction between epistemic and normative dimensions of utopia. We consider the research programs in which the negation of the principle of neutrality of the value qualifies as a utopian practice in the normative sense, the class of Utopias that build linkages between social order and human nature (anthropological utopia), as well as the connection between the utopian imagination and the actual Sociological thinking style. Stand stable characteristics of the utopian imagination, which combine epistemic and normative measure utopia: criticism, imazhinativnost, Universalism, Constructivism, transcendentism, denial of everyday life. Implemented conceptualization of the concept of "utopian imagination" as a common element of competing models explaining the social order. Using the concept of heterotopia made case report - an example of the ethnographic museum. Based on the consideration of the possibility of everyday morality it demonstrates that people in the performance of their practical activities also rely on the resources of the imagination. Substantiates the existence of different types of everyday imagination.

трансформация моделей объяснения в социальных науках утопическое воображение как ресурс социологического теоретизирования transformation of explanation models in the social sciences the utopian imagination as a resource for Sociological Theorizing
English Abstract: The paper analyzes the development and potential explanatory concept of "utopian imagination", the distinction between epistemic and normative dimensions of utopia. comment on logical formalization of theories from organizational ecology
Sociological Methodology, 1997Co-Authors: Michael T. HannanAbstract:Theory formalization, once positioned at center stage in sociology, currently plays little role in general Sociological work. For about a decade beginning in the mid- 1960s, the promise was held out that formalizationespecially mathematization-would improve the quality of Sociological Theorizing and promote the development of cumulative theoretical knowledge about general social processes (see, for instance, Coleman 1964; Blalock 1969). Today, formalization lies on the discipline's periphery, as a specialized activity remote from the development and evaluation of Sociological theories.' This marginalization and devaluation of formalization partly reflects sociology's retreat from general ("ahistorical") formulations. But it also surely reflects an assessment that the payoff to the style of formalization prominent during the heyday of this movement had not met expectations. This is not the place to attempt a full assessment of what went wrong in sociology's flirtation with formalization.2 But one thing seems clear: there was a mismatch between theories and formalization tools. The available natural-language theories were-and are-partial and imprecise; use of the formal languages, especially mathematics, demanded closure and extreme (usually metric) precision. Efforts at formalizing Sociological theories with classical tools required the analyst to assume too much-e.g., to supply the missing assumptions about metrics, continuity, and differentiability of functions. As a result, the formalizations offered during this period yielded models that failed to resonate closely with the original theories.

Pandemic Practices, Part One. How to Turn “Living Through the COVID-19 Pandemic” into a Heuristic Tool for Sociological Theorizing
Società editrice il Mulino S.p.A., 2020Co-Authors: Werron Tobias, Ringel LeopoldAbstract:Werron T, Ringel L. Pandemic Practices, Part One. How to Turn “Living Through the COVID-19 Pandemic” into a Heuristic Tool for Sociological Theorizing. Sociologica. 2020;14(2):55-72.This paper uses the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to engage in an experiment in Sociological Theorizing. For this purpose, we analyze the pandemic as an unpredictable event emerging before our very eyes. To account for the unpredictability of the event, we propose to think about it in terms of "pandemic practices": social practices that emerge and are being reproduced, connected, disconnected and (de)-institutionalized in the course of the pandemic. We introduce a tentative typology of pandemic practices which highlights what we call "pandemic meta-practices", that is, practices that discuss, compare, and evaluate other pandemic practices. Meta-practices, we argue, shape the likelihood of other pandemic practices to prevail by establishing relationships between them (e.g. by comparing the "management" of the pandemic in different countries). The concluding section explains the heuristic advantages of this approach with a number of research questions that we plan to study in more detail during future phases of the pandemic. Our experimental strategy of Theorizing compels us to develop our view further during the event, making this only the first of a series of papers exploring the COVID-19 pandemic
