The paradox of caught-in-the-act surveillance scenes: dilemmas of police video surveillance in Rio de Janeiro
Surveillance & Society, 2012Co-Authors: Bruno De Vasconcelos CardosoAbstract:This paper reports some of the issues raised by field research conducted in the official video surveillance system in public spaces that is operated by the Military Police on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro State Department of Public Security. The research was conducted at the Command and Control Center (CCC), where the images from all the cameras in the police battalions are brought together and at the police batallion at Copacabana (19thBPM), the first area at the city where surveillance cameras were installed. This system is treated as a Sociotechnical Network, formed by the interaction of individuals and technological elements, further increasing the importance of an observation from two different levels of this Network. Special attention is drawed on what I called “the paradox of the caught in-the-act surveillance scenes”, dilemma emerged around the conflict between the work of surveillance and the aesthetics of surveillance, and also on a main videosurveillance problem: (human and/or technical) overdetermination.

PAAKAT: Revista de Tecnología y Sociedad, 2020Co-Authors: Natalia Da Silva Caldas Brito, Marisol Rodriguez GoiaAbstract:This paper carries out a socio-anthropological analysis of Tem Acucar?, a mobile application created in the name of collaborative consumption, intended for objects loans, donations and exchanges between neighbors of large cities. Placing the discussion in the context of the new collective mobilizations organized in the name of solidarity, it adheres to the interpretative framework of the gift, inherited from the French socio-anthropological school, for a better understanding of the phenomenon. It seeks to understand the experiences and perceptions of its users and reflects on the aspects that enhance and limit the purpose of this socio-technical Network in Rio de Janeiro. Interpretative phenomenology is adopted, including observation, interaction and interviews with users to describe and analyze the adherence to the app values, the types of objects that circulate, the way in which encounters occur and the role of trust in the viability of reciprocity relationships. In addition to a strong commitment to the cause of reducing the consumption and the promotion of collaboration and trust among neighbors, the principle of the gift was verified in this Sociotechnical Network in practices that can only be understood under an anti-utilitarian approach. At the same time, trust is an essential factor for the materialization of exchanges and its construction depends on the reputation of the user, as well as the comments of third parties on their profile.

Emergence of modern scientific discourse in the American continent: knowledge claims in the discovery of Erythronium/Vanadium in Mexico (1802–1832)
Scientometrics, 2017Co-Authors: Francisco Collazo-reyes, María Elena Luna-morales, Jane M. Russell, Miguel Ángel Pérez-angónAbstract:In the present paper, we study the discovery of the chemical element number 23, Erythronium/Vanadium (E/V), as an early example of the modern process of validating knowledge claims in México. We examined the published work between 1802 and 1832 of Andrés Manuel del Río (AMR) in the Royal Mining Seminar of México and contrasted the styles of argument and forms of certification between his teaching and experimental writings concerning his claim to the paternity of E/V discovery. We also analyze the respective papers of European authors that replicated, rediscovered and certified AMR’s finding. We use a combination of bibliometric, Sociotechnical Network and literary critical analysis in order to show that the certification of E/V spawned an emerging mode for producing and validating new knowledge in the American continent and particularly in México. In turn, this approach supports AMR’s claim to the discovery of E/V from the production process of the lead brown ore in Zimapán, México.
