derivation and application of the energy dissipation factor in the Design of fishways
Ecological Engineering, 2015Co-Authors: E Towle, Kevi Mulliga, Ale HaroAbstract:Reducing turbulence and associated air entrainment is generally considered advantageous in the engineering Design of fish passage facilities. The well-known energy dissipation factor, or EDF, correlates with observations of the phenomena. However, inconsistencies in EDF forms exist and the bases for volumetric energy dissipation rate criteria are often misunderstood. A comprehensive survey of EDF criteria is presented. Clarity in the application of the EDF and resolutions to these inconsistencies are provided through formal derivations; it is demonstrated that kinetic energy represents only 1/3 of the total energy input for the special case of a broad-crested weir. Specific errors in published Design manuals are identified and resolved. New, fundamentally Sound, Design equations for culvert outlet pools and standard Denil Fishway resting pools are developed. The findings underscore the utility of EDF equations, demonstrate the transferability of volumetric energy dissipation rates, and provide a foundation for future refinement of component-, species-, and life-stage-specific EDF criteria.

Embankment dam spillways and energy dissipators
2014Co-Authors: Hubert ChansonAbstract:For the last fifty years, the Design floods of a number of embankment dams were re-evaluated and the revised spillway outflows are often larger than the original Design discharges. Several embankment overtopping protection systems were developed for earthfill structures, and the applications range from river dykes to tsunami protections including embankment dams. Well- known Designs include timber cribs, sheet-piles, riprap and gabions, reinforced earth, minimum energy loss (MEL) weirs, embankment overflow stepped spillways and the precast concrete block protection systems. In this review, several Design techniques are reviewed and discussed based upon prototype experiences. A critical analysis of their performances highlights that a safe operation of embankment dam spillways and associated energy dissipators relies upon a Sound Design and a good quality of construction, suitable flow conditions, together with regular maintenance

Introducing originality and innovation in engineering teaching: The hydraulic Design of culverts
European Journal of Engineering Education, 2000Co-Authors: Hubert ChansonAbstract:Recently, the teaching of engineering Design has become a presentation of standards and codes rather than the learning of Sound Design practices. Too many students request formulae and equations to solve a Design exercise and they fail to develop any Design originality. The present student attitude leads to young graduate engineers without critical ability and innovative flair. The writer has developed an innovative hydraulic Design exercise based upon culvert Design. Each Design exercise could lead to more than one correct Design per student in the class. Students have to learn basic Design calculations based upon lecture material, notes, field visits and laboratory experiment. The practical component (laboratory, field visit) contributes significantly to their understanding of the complete system, including some basic safety and professional issues.

Game Sound: An Introduction to the History, Theory, and Practice of Video Game Music and Sound Design
2010, 2008Co-Authors: Karen CollinsAbstract:A distinguishing feature of video games is their interactivity, and Sound plays an important role in this: a player's actions can trigger dialogue, Sound effects, ambient Sound, and music. And yet game Sound has been neglected in the growing literature on game studies. This book fills that gap, introducing readers to the many complex aspects of game audio, from its development in early games to theoretical discussions of immersion and realism. In Game Sound, Karen Collins draws on a range of sourcesincluding composers, Sound Designers, voice-over actors and other industry professionals, Internet articles, fan sites, industry conferences, magazines, patent documents, and, of course, the games themselvesto offer a broad overview of the history, theory, and production practice of video game audio. Game Sound has two underlying themes: how and why games are different from or similar to film or other linear audiovisual media; and technology and the constraints it has placed on the production of game audio. Collins focuses first on the historical development of game audio, from penny arcades through the rise of home games and the recent rapid developments in the industry. She then examines the production process for a contemporary game at a large game company, discussing the roles of composers, Sound Designers, voice talent, and audio programmers; considers the growing presence of licensed intellectual property (particularly popular music and films) in games; and explores the function of audio in games in theoretical terms. Finally, she discusses the difficulties posed by nonlinearity and interactivity for the composer of game music.
