Sound pressure mapping with a hand held Sound Level Meter/real time analyzer

More recently the trend has been to use large microphone arrays and acoustic holography. Acoustic intensity is reasonably easy to do but requires an intensity probe, a two channel analyzer some training and special software. In total the system cost can easily exceed $20,000. Acoustic holography systems provide more information but are much more expensive and need trained personnel. However, a low cost single channel SLM/RTA can be used to generate very good Sound pressure contour maps that help noise control engineers understand noise sources. The other advantage is that it is simple to use requiring only an hour or less of training. Several example pressure maps will be presented and compared to acoustic intensity maps.

Low cost Sound Level Meters for education and outreach

Muehleisen, Andrew MorrisonAbstract:It used to be that when you wanted a low cost Sound Level Meter for teaching and outreach, you could purchase a Radio Shack 33-2050 analog Sound Level Meter. These Meters were fairly accurate as well as rugged and could be used as a microphone with preamp in a pinch. Now that the Radio Shack Meter is no longer for sale what other options are available? In recent years a plethora of Meters and software apps have become readily available at a low cost. In this presentation, the authors will discuss some of the qualities one should look for in a low cost Meter to be used for outreach and education and suggest some equipment that meets these needs.

preliminary observation on two kinds of measurements to individual noise exposure Levels in the inspection workers of a thermal power station
China Occupational Medicine, 2010Co-Authors: Liu AnshengAbstract:Objective To observe the consistency of individual noise exposure Levels in inspection workers measured by Sound-Level Meter and personal Sound exposure Meter.Methods Equivalent A-weighted Sound pressure Levels in 7 workers of each inspection position were measured by a integrating Sound-Level Meter,meanwhile the inspection time at each position were recorded.Then the 8-hour equivalent A-weighted Sound pressure Levels in inspection workers were compared to the results which were synchronously measured by personal Sound exposure Meter.Results The paired t-test showed that there was no significant difference(P0.5) in individual noise exposure Levels of 7 inspection workers between Sound-Level Meter and personal Sound exposure Meter.The results of two kinds of measurements were consistent.Conclusion It is concluded that the proper use of Sound-Level Meter can accurately evaluate the individual noise exposure Levels of floating-position workers exposed to steady noise.
