Sound Stages in the city a film production facility
2017Co-Authors: Carl Fredrik FossAbstract:Sound Stages are used for creating films. “Black boxes”, give the possibility of controlling light and Sound. Its like a blank canvas of space, intended for film production. The projects main objective has been to handle the challenge of placing three large film production spaces in an open public site alongside Oslo’s main river, Akerselva. The motivation behind this challenge was to be able to create a good film production facility with strong connections to the city, surrounding nature, and the public. The project is characterized by Three volumes protruding from an accessible roof area. These volumes are taking up, reflecting the format of the existing, nearby located building volumes. The project offers the general public the possibility to observe, to experience, to get an impression of the movie making profession by means of an interactive function, between the city and the building.

Positioning of Musical Foreground Parts in Surrounding Sound Stages

While stereophonic mixing techniques are highly developed, not all of them generate promising results in an object-based audio environment. An outstanding feature is the new approach of positioning Sound objects in the musical Sound scene, providing the opportunity of stable localization throughout the whole listening area. Previous studies have shown that even if object-based audio reproduction systems can enhance the playback situation, the critical and guiding attributes of the mix are still uncertain. This study investigates the impact on listening preference evoked by different spatial arrangements of Sound objects, with a strong emphasis on the high-attention foreground objects of the presented music track.

Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011Co-Authors: Anthony K HooverAbstract:Sound for bollywood films is rarely recorded live on location, but is looped or added later, in large part because of poor ambient acoustics. Several new Sound Stages in Film City, Mumbai, India, were intended for “Hollywood” quality acoustics, but construction ceased shortly after starting. Then, after several years' hiatus, the project was renewed with the directive that the existing fragmentary construction be used in the new design and as the foundation for subsequent construction. This paper will discuss the background, site conditions, encroaching hutments, design issues, concerns for local materials and methods, and the results of post-construction acoustical testing.

SoundEffects - An Interdisciplinary Journal of Sound and Sound Experience, 2012Co-Authors: Morten MichelsenAbstract:In order to discuss analytically spatial aspects of recorded Sound William Moylan’s concept of ‘Sound stage’ is developed within a musicological framework as part of a Sound paradigm which includes timbre, texture and Sound stage. Two Michael Jackson songs (‘The Lady in My Life’ from 1982 and ‘Scream’ from 1995) are used to: a) demonstrate the value of such a conceptualisation, and b) demonstrate that the model has its limits, as record producers in the 1990s began ignoring the conventions of stereo recording’s illusion of three dimensions and reached for a severing of the intimate relations between Sound and Euclidic space.
