  • Bursts detected and NOT detected by EGRET imaging Spark Chambers
Fourth Huntsville gamma-ray burst symposium, 1998
    Co-Authors: B. L. Dingus, Jennifer R. Catelli, E. J. Schneid
    Abstract:

EGRET has detected the highest energy emission from gamma-ray bursts. Only a few bursts have been detected either coincident or just following the BATSE detected emission. These bursts are among the brightest bursts detected by BATSE. The EGRET fluxes, including upper limits, are consistent with extrapolations for all the burst spectra measured with Comptel.

  • Single pi-zero production in neutrino interactions

    Co-Authors: Chapin, Thomas Jonathan
    Abstract:

Production of single pio particles in neutrino reactions has been studied in an experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The neutral current reactions, vn -> vnpio and vp + vprr , and the charged current reaction, vn -> u-ppi0 ,were investigated. The neutrino detector was made up of optical Spark Chambers and liquid o and solid scintillation counters. The pi0 is detected by observing showers from its decay into two gamma rays. Muons are distinguished from other particles by their long range without interaction. Time of flight measurement is used to discriminate against neutron background. The neutral and charged current events are discussed, and the ratio of neutral current events to charged current events is found to be 0.149 ± 0.048 after corrections. Nuclear charge exchange corrections to this result because the detector contains complex nuclei are also discussed. Kinematic distributions for the final state particles and the ppi0 mass distribution are given.U of I OnlyThesi
