    La Maison des Fondateurs in Le Brassus Switzerland is going to represent the watch making manufacture Audemars Piguet. Audemars Piguet stands for the finest quality, precision as well as innovation based on traditional watchmaking expertise and craftsmanship. La Maison des Fondateurs has been developed from a competition proposal to the execution project by the architects BIG—Bjarke Ingels Group. The created interlocking all glass spiral evolves the building volume out of the rough, natural landscape providing a perfect linear museum path for the building program. Despite the severe loading and weather conditions, inspired by the high values of Audemars Piguet the project team designed the building to the technical limits. The curved and very large insulated façade glass units as well as the curved glass partition walls of the interlocking glass spiral are forming the load bearing structure. All vertical and horizontal loads are transferred by these glass components making solid columns and shear wall obsolete. The article reflects the close collaboration of the designers, engineers, Specialist Contractor and industry. The global structural concept, transfer of the concentrated point loading into the curved structural glass element, testing procedures as well as the structural bonding beyond standards and the context of energy efficiency are discussed and elaborated.

  • Corruption of the commercial process revisited

    Abstract:

    This article is based on a report entitled “The Corruption of the Commercial Process” (“the Report ”) written over twenty years ago by John Huxtable, the then Chairman of the Confederation of Construction Specialists. The Report is a passionate call to arms exposing the injustices felt by Specialist Contractors. This article conducts an enquiry into the validity of the findings of the Report before updating Huxtable’s material from the viewpoint of a 21st century Specialist Contractor. The Report was the original rallying cry for the Confederation of Construction Specialists (“the Confederation”) timed as it was with that body’s inception in 1983. The Confederation was set up to provide an effective national focus for the interests of Specialist construction companies. The Report includes a Declaration of the Rights of Construction Specialists and a ten point challenge to the wider construction industry to improve the position of the Specialists. The main section of the Report promotes Huxtable’s contention that the imposition of one sided terms and conditions by main Contractors on Specialist Contractors amounts to a corruption of the commercial process.

    Abstract:

    The views and experiences of Specialist Contractors on partnering have to date received insufficient attention in the UK where the focus has been centred on the client-main Contractor relationship. An investigation into the position of Specialists brings a new perspective on the national and international debate about how further steps towards partnering the supply chain can be achieved and whether they are desirable. Some of the findings are positive such as the high level of understanding of partnering concepts among Specialists. There are examples of successful collaborations and evidence of informal partnering being continued downstream of the Specialist Contractors, often irrespective of whether upstream partnering is occurring or not. Practical issues about involvement and some cynicism about the aims of partnering are also detectable. The discussion recommends that greater emphasis should be placed on the role of the client and the competitive advantage available to all through the proper use of partnering. Despite positive developments little has changed in the 10 years since partnering was introduced to improve the lot of the Specialist Contractor in terms of the levels of disputes and the incidence of long-term collaboration.

    This chapter presents and analyses data gathered on Specialist Contractors’ experiences and views on partnering in the United Kingdom through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The purpose of carrying out the work was to raise awareness of the position of Specialists to inform the wider discussion about whether further steps towards partnering the supply chain are possible and/or desirable. The findings partially support the existing perceived cynical view of partnering in practice. However, more often than not this was found to be a view held by Specialists without direct experience of partnering. Other findings are more positive such as the healthy level of understanding of partnering concepts. There are examples of successful collaborations and evidence of informal partnering being continued downstream of the Specialist Contractors, often irrespective of whether upstream partnering is occurring or not. The discussion recommends that greater emphasis should be placed on the role of the clients and their involvement in successful partnering. Despite these positive developments little has changed in the ten years since partnering was introduced to improve the lot of the Specialist Contractor in terms of the levels of disputes and the incidence of long-term collaboration.
