    Abstract:

    A reaction typically involves a few active modes while the other modes are largely preserved throughout the reaction as Spectators. Excitation of an active mode is expected to promote the reaction, but depositing energy in a Spectator mode typically has no effect, because of the differing ability for energy flow to the reaction coordinate. In this work, we report a surprising case of mode specificity in a key radical-radical reaction OH + HO2 → H2O + O2, where such canonical expectations fail to hold. Despite its Spectator nature, the vibrational excitation of the OH reactant is shown at low collision energies to enhance the reactivity significantly. This unique effect can be attributed to the increased attraction with HO2 due to the larger dipole of the stretched OH. At low collision energies, the stronger attraction increases the chance of capturing the reactants to form a hydrogen-bonded complex, thus of passing through the submerged barrier. The novel mechanism differs from the conventional vibrational enhancement via coupling to the reaction coordinate at the transition state, enriching our understanding of mode specificity in chemistry.

    Abstract:

    How chemical reactions are influenced by reactant vibrational excitation is a long-standing question at the core of chemical reaction dynamics. In reactions of polyatomic molecules, where the Polanyi rules are not directly applicable, certain vibrational modes can act as Spectators. In nucleophilic substitution reactions, CH stretching vibrations have been considered to be such Spectators. While this picture has been challenged by some theoretical studies, experimental insight has been lacking. We show that the nucleophilic substitution reaction of F- with CH3I is minimally influenced by an excitation of the symmetric CH stretching vibration. This contrasts with the strong vibrational enhancement of the proton transfer reaction measured in parallel. The Spectator behavior of the stretching mode is supported by both quasi-classical trajectory simulations and the Sudden Vector Projection model.

    The main goal of Virtual Reality (VR) in cinema is to immerse the Spectator inside the scene. Recent VR headsets are trying to attain this goal using 360° videos. However, the storytelling and the cinema experience can be hindered because Spectators using VR headsets have to continuously look around in order to explore the scene. Moreover, VR headsets restrict users to an individual experience, in which a big part of the non-verbal communication (i.e. facial expressions, gestures, and postures) is precluded. This potentially disrupts the shared and social experience of watching movies. This paper explores for the first time these potential issues by comparing a social VR system (Hyve-3D) with a cardboard VR headset during the vision of short movies including or not a storyline. Results suggest that the social VR system is more adapted for VR cinema experience.

  • Analysis of synchronization issues for live video-context transmission service

    A promising feature brought along the progressive deployment of LTE concerns the increase of the uplink bandwidth. We exploit this new capability by focusing on an innovative usage defined by the simultaneous transmission of live video and contextual data caught through end user devices like smartphones towards websites or distant Spectators. The contextual information may indeed be precious to the Spectator for several reasons. On one side, this information cannot be deduced from the video images currently displayed. On the other side, being closely related to the live event, context can be fruitfully exploited by the Spectator to complete her understanding of what she is presently watching and to possibly interact with the filming person to influence the rest of the capture. The main property of this new feature can be expressed as a synchronization constraint between the video and the contextual data. Ensuring this property is challenging due to the presence of variable delays in the end-to-end path. We focus on particular contextual data (generated by sensors embedded in Android based smartphones) the specificities of which are analyzed in order to derive a general synchronization solution. We finally propose some optimizations taking in account the characteristics of the devices used to display the contextual data.

We focus in this paper on an innovative usage associated with this new capability and defined by the simultaneous transmission toward websites or distant Spectators of live video caught through end user devices like smartphones, together with contextual data generated by the device. The contextual information may indeed be precious to the Spectator for several reasons. On one side, this information cannot be deduced from the video images currently displayed. On the other side, being closely related to the live event currently displayed, context can be fruitfully exploited by the Spectator to complete her understanding of what she is presently watching and to possibly interact with the filming person to influence the rest of the capture. The main property of this new feature can be expressed as a synchronization constraint between the video and the contextual data. Ensuring this property is challenging due to the presence of variable delays in the end-to-end path. We proposed in a previous work solution handling desynchronization between video and contextual data using restricted assumptions. In this paper, we tackle the general case relaxing all the restricted assumptions.

In this paper, we analyze this problem and propose optimization solutions taking into account the characteristics of the devices used to catch and exploit the contextual data. We show by simulations their effectiveness as compared to the current techniques. Our algorithms enable to verify the synchronization and to properly use the endpoint resources.

  • Impact of Spectators’ Perceptions of Corporate Social Responsibility on Regional Attachment in Sports: Three-Wave Indirect Effects of Spectators’ Pride and Team Identification

    Abstract:

    The professional sports events industry is becoming immensely popular due to a global social shift toward larger numbers of Spectators at sports events and an ever-increasing variety of such events. This study aimed to investigate the impact of Spectators’ perception of corporate social responsibility on regional attachment by applying social identity theory. The present study introduces two mediators, namely, Spectators’ pride and team identification, to enlighten the relationship between Spectators’ perception of corporate social responsibility and regional attachment, thus contributing to the literature on corporate social responsibility in sports. This quantitative study used a time-lagged approach to collect data in three waves at a time interval of one week and the final sample consisted of 511 respondents (i.e., Spectators). Hierarchical regression analysis bootstrapping approach was utilized to analyze the hypothesis. We found that the Spectators’ perceptions of corporate social responsibility positively influenced their team identification, and this relationship was mediated by Spectators’ pride. In addition, Spectators’ pride positively influences regional attachment, and this relationship is mediated by team identification. These findings provide new directions for understanding corporate social responsibility, team identification, Spectators’ pride, and regional attachment in sports contexts. The practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

  • Sports Spectator segmentation: examining the differing psychological connections among Spectators of leagues and teams

    Abstract:

    The results from this study extend previous research by empirically testing the involvement based Psychological Continuum Model (PCM) segmentation procedure on sports Spectators. To date, the procedure has only been verified using sports participants, although the PCM was developed with a broader range of sports consumers in mind. The validity of the procedure is confirmed using two online surveys, which gather data from Spectators at both the league (n=761) and team (n=623) level. A three-step segmentation procedure then places respondents into the PCM stages - awareness, attraction, attachment and allegiance. ANOVA tests indicate that the four groups significantly differ from one another on attitudinal and behavioural measures for both league and team Spectators. Findings suggest that the PCM is an appropriate framework to investigate fan development at both league and team levels. Thus sports marketers are provided with a research segmentation tool capable of helping them to better understand their heterogeneous consumer bases and thus guide marketing decisions.

    Abstract:

    The relationship between the consumption of sport via media and its more active counterpart, attendance, remains ambiguous. Some researchers have observed a symbiotic relationship at work—each behavior fueling the other, whereas others see no connection or argue that media use competes with live attendance as a recreational substitute. The current study of baseball game Spectators (n= 308) employed adual-route framework(DRF) to describe symbiotic and substitution behaviors. High/low mixes of media use and attendance were used to identify four distinct modes of intake (heavy, light, and media- and event-dominant). Follow-up comparisons distinguished each mode with discrete levels of involvement, satisfaction, and Spectator attraction. The results expose the limits of previous models of Spectator behavior and encourage us to broaden our understandings of consumption frequency beyond attendance alone. The DRF modes suggest that plotting media use in conjunction with attendance offers a more accurate account of Spectator involvement. If models like the escalator dissected the data, they would consider the light and media-dominant and the heavy and event-dominant modes as equivalent. The importance of media-dominant consumption and the strategic implications of these segments are discussed.
