    Spiral Concentrators have been widely used in coal preparation plants in Illinois and elsewhere to clean 1 mm ×150 μm particle size coal fraction. The major factors which have made Spiral concentrator so popular include its low capital and operating cost, no chemical reagent or dense medium requirement, and the ease of operation/maintenance. Spirals are capable of providing excellent clean coal recovery although at a relatively high ash content. Like any other water-only separation process, Spirals are also susceptible to continuously fluctuating feed quality and solids content in the feed slurry, which are quite common in a plant. The main objective of the project is to develop an inexpensive control system for Spiral to automatically adjust the splitter position with fluctuating feed characteristics to maintain the desired effective separation specific gravity (density cut-point).

    Abstract:

    Abstract The secondary circulation in a Spiral concentrator had been explained in an earlier publication with the help of classical solid mechanics. In the present paper, classical solid mechanics has again been applied to develop simplified flow equations for fluid and slurry systems specific to the Spiral concentrator. A new concept of composite coefficient of friction has been introduced for the slurry system, which considers the solids concentration and friction between layers of water. The flow equation can predict flow velocity with the number of turns and radial distance in Spiral Concentrators. Simulation studies on the proposed acceleration and velocity equations have been performed, which align with the general fluid flow behavior observed in Spiral Concentrators. A comparison of the velocities calculated with the proposed equation has been drawn with the corrected plot of equilibrium velocity, which further supports the presented equations.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The Spiral concentrator has been extensively used in the industry for decades. Gaps, however, appear to remain in understanding and explaining its unique flow pattern. Spiral is marked by the existence of high shear rate. Gravity, drag, frictional force between particles and trough, centrifugal force and lift force act in a particular manner to generate a unique flow pattern called secondary circulation. The present work attempts to explain how geometrical features and different forces help in generation of secondary circulation in pure fluid. A new concept of force balance from classical solid mechanics has been introduced to explain the generation of secondary flow and behavior of particles on the Spiral trough. A modified form of Bagnold force equation has been presented along with simulation results.
