The product flow behavior could be well described by the Herschel–Bulkley’s model (R2 > 0.98), whose parameters were modeled as function of temperature (R2 > 0.91). The product has shown a weak gel behavior, with storage modulus higher than loss modulus in the evaluated frequency range. The storage and loss modules could be well described by a power function of the oscillatory frequency (R2 > 0.93), whose parameters were modeled as function of temperature (R2 > 0.97). Moreover, a power modified Cox-Merz rule could describe the rheological properties of S. purpurea pulp (R2 > 0.96). The obtained data are potentially useful for future studies on food properties and process design.

Habitat fragmentation negatively affects effective gene flow via pollen, and male and female fitness in the dioecious tree, Spondias purpurea (Anacardiaceae)

Habitat fragmentation negatively affects population size and mutualistic interactions that directly impact plant fitness and genetic diversity; however, little is known about effects on dioecious trees. We assessed the effects of forest fragmentation on plant-pollinator interactions, male and female reproductive success, realized gene flow, genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure (SGS) in the dioecious tree Spondias purpurea. The study was performed in continuous and fragmented forest habitats in the region of the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, Jalisco, Mexico. Stingless bees were the main pollinators followed by wasps and flies. There were no differences in pollinator assemblages between habitat conditions, however visitation rate was higher in continuous habitats. Male trees produced more flowers than female trees in both habitat conditions. Total flower production was higher in fragmented habitats, but a higher fruit-set was observed in continuous habitat. In fragmented habitats, realized pollen flow occurs at a shorter distance and correlated paternity was higher than in continuous habitats. Genetic diversity and SGS were comparable among adult trees between habitat conditions; however, juveniles and seeds had lower heterozygosity levels and higher inbreeding coefficients in fragmented habitats. Our results suggest that mating systems and pollinator dependence are both key elements influencing plant vulnerability to habitat fragmentation. We conclude that conservation efforts should focus on processes that maintain reproductive success and genetic diversity of species to ensure persistence in the long term.

Spondias purpurea is a vertebrate-dispersed, insect-pollinated dioecious tropical tree. We assessed the influence of sex ratio, effective and realized gene flow on genetic diversity, FSGS and individual fitness within a 30 ha plot in the tropical dry forest reserve of Chamela-Cuixmala, Mexico. All individuals within the plot were tagged, geo-referenced and sampled for genetic analysis. We measured dbh and monitored sex expression during two reproductive seasons for all individuals. We collected seeds directly from maternal trees for effective pollen dispersal analysis, and analyzed established seedlings to assess realized pollen and seed dispersal. Nine microsatellite loci were used to describe genetic diversity parameters, FSGS and gene flow patterns among different size classes. A total of 354 individuals were located and classified into three size classes based on their dbh ( 20 cm). Isolation and characterization of microsatellites loci in Spondias purpurea (Anacardiaceae) and cross amplification in congeneric species.

Fuchs, Nick Harvey, Mauricio QuesadaAbstract:Microsatellite markers provide high polymorphism levels, useful to study genetic diversity and gene flow patterns in plant populations. Here we develop and characterize microsatellite primers to evaluate patterns of genetic structure and diversity, and gene flow levels in the dioecious tropical tree Spondias purpurea (Anacardiaceae). Twenty-four microsatellite primers were developed for Spondias purpurea. Polymorphism was evaluated in 139 individuals from three localities in Mexico. Ten loci were polymorphic. The number of alleles ranged between two and 21, the average number of alleles was 5.88. Cross-amplification trials on S. mombin, S. radlkoferi, Astronium graveolens and Amphipterygium adstringens achieved successful amplification for only six microsatellites in S. mombin and S. radlkoferi. Microsatellites developed for S. purpurea will be a useful tool to estimate genetic diversity within and among populations, as well as to assess the consequences of habitat fragmentation on gene flow patterns of this species.

Preferences, patterns and consequences of branch removal on the dioecious tropical tree Spondias purpurea (Anacardiaceae) by the insect borer Oncideres albomarginata chamela (Cerambycidae)

In this studie we evaluated preferences of branch removal by the insect borer Oncideres albomarginata chamela in the tropical dioecious tree Spondias purpurea L. The objectives were to determine the preferences and patterns of the removal of branches, to evaluate the effect of branch removal in the vegetative regeneration of branches, and to evaluate the effect of branch removal on the regeneration of fertile branches of male and female trees of S. purpurea. During three consecutive years of study, damage caused to branches by the girdled borer was associated with plant gender. The proportion of branches removed by the insect was greater for female than for male trees. The effects of branch removal were evaluated in attacked regenerated and unattacked branches. Removed branches regenerated a year after the insect borer attacked them. Branch removal affected the probability of producing fertile branches. The preference by O. a. chamela is apparently associated with the nutritional quality of the host.

ComissiongAbstract:Chili plums (Spondias purpurea var. lutea) were canned in acidified sucrose syrup using process variables. Utilisation of fresh chili plums (unblanched) for canning resulted in higher preference (P<0.05) and higher quality grade canned product (P<0.05) than the blanched chili plums. Storage of chili plums in 40% sucrose syrup or in 15% brine followed by freezing at -2 to -4°C and then packing 15-16 chili plums in 120-130 ml of 40% syrup per can, steam exhausting at 80°C for 5 min and retorting at 120°C for 30 min resulted in fair to good quality product. There were no differences (P<0.05) in colour, texture and taste between products. Chili plums were less dark and green on canning. On storage (2 months at 30-32°C), there was no microbial growth, no further loss in ascorbic acid content and the condition of cans was satisfactory.
