    Abstract:

    The security evaluation for Mail Distribution Systems focuses on certification and reliability of sensitive data between mail servers. The need to certify the information conveyed is a result of known weaknesses in the simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP). The most important consequence of these weaknesses is the possibility to mislead the recipient, which is achieved via spam (especially Email Spoofing). Email Spoofing refers to alterations in the headers and/or the content of the message. Therefore, the authenticity of the message is compromised. Unfortunately, the broken link between certification and reliability of the information is unsolicited Email (spam). Unlike the current practice of estimating the cost of spam, which prompts organizations to purchase and maintain appropriate anti-spam software, our approach offers an alternative perspective of the economic and moral consequences of unsolicited mail. The financial data provided in this paper show that spam is a major contributor to the financial and production cost of an organization, necessitating further attention. Additionally, this paper highlights the importance and severity of the weaknesses of the SMTP protocol, which can be exploited even with the use of simple applications incorporated within most commonly used Operating Systems (e.g. Telnet).   • An Email application with active spoof monitoring and control

    Abstract:

    Spoofing is a serious security issue for Email applications. Although several anti-Email Spoofing techniques have been developed, most of them do not provide users with sufficient control and information on spoof attacks. In this paper a web-based client oriented anti-Spoofing Email application is proposed which actively detects, monitors and controls Email Spoofing attacks. When the application detects a spoofed message, it triggers an alert message and sends the spoofed message into a spoof filter. Moreover, the user who has received the spoofed message is given the option of notifying the real sender of the Spoofing attack. In this way an active spoof control is achieved. The application is hosted using the HTTPS protocol and uses notification messages that are sent in parallel with Email messages via a channel that has been secured by the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol. The notification messages allows the application to detect spoofed Emails. The application has been developed in PHP using the Netbeans IDE and provides a user-friendly interface which is easily deployable over the web.

    Abstract:

    Spoofing is a very common security threat to Email applications. Several powerful techniques have been developed to counteract Spoofing, but most of them are server-oriented and transparent to the user. In this paper a client-oriented Secure Socket Layer (SSL)-based anti-Spoofing application is proposed. This application allows a client to send trusted Emails and authenticate received Emails using the SSL protocol. The application has been developed in Java and it provides users with a table populated with details of all devices on a subnet. It uses cryptographic self-signed certificates to exchange a secure authentication message alongside the Email with a view to prevent Spoofing. The application has been tested on devices within the same subnet and it successfully authenticated valid Email messages and detected spoofed ones. The main advantages of this application are the incorporation of SSL, its user-friendliness and its ability to allow users to use anti-Spoofing measures independently of an Email server.
