    Abstract:

    Purpose: To determine whether a low-cost, commercially available global positioning system (GPS) can be used to study outdoor walking of healthy subjects, allowing the detection of walking and resting (nonwalking) periods and the accurate estimation of speed and distance of each walking periods. Methods: The same EGNOS-enabled GPS receiver was used for all experiments. In experiment 1, various signal-processing methodologies were tested for the detection of both walking and resting bouts from a prescribed walking protocol (PWP) that was performed 21 times by six healthy subjects on an outdoor athletic track. In experiment 2, the accuracies of these processing methodologies were then tested through a blinded Analysis of different PWP for 10 other healthy subjects in a designated public park. In experiment 3, speed and distance calculated by the GPS receiver during series of 100-400 m on an outdoor athletic track were compared with actual speed and distance. Results: Raw data were inaccurate, but the combination of a low-pass filter, an adapted high-pass filter, and artifact processing enabled one to detect walking and resting bouts with an accuracy of 89.8% (95% CI, 84.4-93.4). A manual post-processing methodology, used to complete previous automatic processing results, provided the highest concordance with the PWP, reaching an accuracy of 97.1% (95% CI, 93.5-98.8). There was an excellent relationship both between actual and processed distances (R2 = 1.000) and between actual and processed speeds (R2 = 0.947). Conclusion: Low-cost, commercially available GPS may be accurate in studying outdoor walking, provided that simple data processing is applied. Future validation in diseased subjects could allow for the study of free-living walking capacity, such as maximal walking distance in vascular patients.

    Abstract:

    This paper presents an Analysis methodology to calculate the exact theoretical normalized site attenuation (NSA) from the original 1982 model and graph the results in a three-dimensional surface plot - all by using only a standard electronic Spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel. Furthermore the 3-D surface plot can be rotated and viewed from any desired elevation or perspective, all within the Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet program. This Spreadsheet Analysis technique has several advantages: (1) the popularity of Spreadsheets today provides an easy to use software platform that can be utilized to fully automate the complex theoretical NSA calculations; (2) the Spreadsheet provides an open framework whereby all areas of the model are open for visual inspection; and (3) the Spreadsheet model can be used for "what-if" scenarios whereby the test site input parameters are easily modified and the calculations re-run for new test site configurations.

    Abstract:

    This paper describes an Analysis methodology that implements the theoretical normalized site attenuation (NSA) model into a standard electronic Spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel, that can calculate and plot the exact theoretical NSA value for any given frequency of interest. The theoretical NSA is referenced in ANSIC63.4(1992) and is discussed in numerous papers in the open literature. The mathematical model for the theoretical NSA consists of a set of complex equations for horizontal and vertical polarization and is best suited for calculation via computer automation. The Spreadsheet Analysis technique addressed in this paper has several advantages: (1) the popularity of Spreadsheets today provides an easy to use software platform that can be utilized to fully automate the complex theoretical NSA calculations,( 2) the Spreadsheet provides an open framework whereby all areas of the model are open for visual inspection, and (3) the Spreadsheet model can be used for "what-if" scenarios whereby the test site input parameters are easily modified and the calculations re-pun for new test site configurations.

    Abstract:

    Normalized site attenuation (NSA), has become the standard method for determining the adequacy of EMC test sites to perform EMI emission measurements. The measurement of the NSA parameter for a test site and the subsequent required data processing and Analysis can sometimes be complicated, tedious, and time-consuming. This is particularly so for alternate test sites (e.g., semi-anechoic chambers) where 'volumetric' NSA Analysis is required and also when swept frequency measurements are performed that contain large amounts of data. In cases such as this the management of the large amounts of data can be just as critical as the actual measurements. This paper proposes a method by which the large amount of NSA data and calculations can be managed in a reasonably simplistic manner through the use of standard Spreadsheet Analysis. This method has the distinct advantage (in contrast to special custom software) of providing an open framework model whereby all calculation details are readily available and visible for review and inspection, including all formulas used in the calculations. The foundation for this Spreadsheet Analysis discussion is based on the author's recent work involving NSA qualification testing of a new 10-meter semi-anechoic chamber for a major manufacturer.

    Abstract Spreadsheet Analysis (SHTS) of TG (and DTA) data has been employed by the present author to satisfactorily determine kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E) and reaction order (n), as well as mechanism. Many of the functions used in the macros for SHTS were found to have counterparts in relational database managers. Thus, the paradox 3 manager was utilized to determine a “most probable mechanism” (MPM) from among 10 possible decomposition mechanisms using TG data, as well as the corresponding value of E. Database Analysis was carried out on theoretical and experimental data employing a previously described algorithm.

    Abstract In a recent report [1], a mathematical expression was developed for the concurrent evaluation of two rate constants in two consecutive first-order reactions. When this expression was implemented using a computer program, the values of the rate constants obtained agreed favorably with theoretically assumed and reported experimental values. In the present paper, the preceding expression will be implemented utilizing Spreadsheet Analysis. To this end, the computer program used to implement the above expression has been modified and adapted for Spreadsheet use. The resulting macro has then been utilized to analyze both theoretical and experimental data. The calculated values of rate constants obtained have been compared with theoretically assumed and reported experimental values.

    Abstract Spreadsheet Analysis of non-isothermal TG (NITG) data has recently been successfully applied to various organic and inorganic materials using various algorithms. In this paper, this type of Analysis will now be applied to isothermal TG (ITG) data. An algorithm will be tested for ITG data which is a modification of one which has been successfully utilized for NITG data. The aim of this paper is to extend the utilization of Spreadsheet Analysis to the estimation of kinetic parameters from both theoretical and experimental ITG data.
