Application of Spring Hangers in High Temperature Pipeline of FPSO
2015Co-Authors: Yuan Hong-taAbstract:The thermal expansion and contraction in high temperature conditions and displacement load due to extra offset in junctions are main factors which cause the extremely high stress, torque and counter-force in the pipeline. Increasing the flexibility of pipe system through the rational design of the pipeline routes and the Hanger arrangements can effectively decrease the thermal carrier and the stress of the pipeline. Taking an engine exhaust pipe system of a ship as an example, the numerical model is built in the Caesar II software. The influence of the thermal expansion load on the exhaust pipe on the pipeline is analyzed. The influences of the Spring support and the rigid support on the primary and the secondary stress of the high temperature exhaust pipe are compared. The research finds that in the high temperature pipeline, the Spring Hanger not only can increase the flexibility of the pipe system and reduce the thermal stress, but also can decrease the concentrated force of the pipeline on the Hanger and minimize the constraint load beard by the pipeline.

Analysis of the influence of shock response of piping system to its structure and parameter
2009Co-Authors: Wang YuAbstract:The shock response of piping system is simulated and tested. The influence of the shock response to the Spring Hanger, gap, and Spring support is studied. The result indicated that when the Spring-Hanger is installed on the piping system, the maximum shock acceleration of the mass decrease and when the gap is installed, the value increases, but the maximum shock strains of the elbow are on the contrary. The rigidity of Spring Hanger and the size of the gap varies little have little influence on the two response values. The two values decrease when the Spring support is installed and they decrease more obviously when the support is in equilibrium. The research result offers the support to the shock resistance of the piping system of the ship.

Failure Analysis of the Fracture of a Spring Hanger
2018 12th International Conference on Reliability Maintainability and Safety (ICRMS), 2018Co-Authors: Menglin Wang, Yingying Ruan, Xiaopeng Liang, Song TangAbstract:The small Spring Hanger analyzed in this paper is made of 60Si2MnA Spring steel. In the past, this kind of Hanger has performed well in the acceptance test and is used by many customers; however, in a recent batch of these Hangers, the first tested Hanger accidentally fractured in the lifting test. Thus, the acceptance test failed. Then, the tensile test was performed on a random sample of Hangers from the same batch, and the tensile strength was found to be much lower than the design requirements. In fact, the tensile strength was 30% less than the normal strength, which can result in low stress fractures at loads below the normal bearing capacity of the material. In order to find out the cause of the failure and to solve the fracture problem, a fault tree was built according to the fracture shape and manufacturing process of the Hangers. The fracture morphology and the mechanical properties of the Hangers were examined, and the working conditions, manufacturing process, and production site were all investigated. A verification test of production was also conducted after data collection and preliminary analysis. Results of the fault tree and the verification test indicated that the main cause of Hanger failure was that the dehydrogenation treatment was not carried out in a timely manner after chemical plating of the Hangers in this batch; the poor dehydrogenation effect led to hydrogen brittleness failure of the Hanger. This failure analysis shows that for Spring steel bearing parts, effective dehydrogenation treatment should be conducted immediately after plating so as to prevent hydrogen brittleness and ensure reliability and safety of the product.

For this reason a limit Spring Hanger, which has both vibration-isolation effect of the Spring and maintained the property of original rigid Hanger, had been designed. Arter installing, the max. vibration amplitude of the said floor be-comes 0.013 mm, sensation of vibration being obviously reduced, reaching the anticipated purpose.
