A dynamic perspective in Freeman’s Stakeholder Model
2011Co-Authors: Yves FassinAbstract:Stakeholder literature has acknowledged the need to complement the extant theory on Stakeholder management by more dynamic perspectives. This article makes use of the recent terminology of stakewatcher and stakeseeker to illustrate the dynamic aspect of Stakeholder theory transposed in the graphical representation of Freeman’s Stakeholder Model. Presenting a few selected case studies, it applies the scheme on the concept of value responsibility chain; it exemplifies the role of stakeseekers in various forms of activism, from shareholders, NGOs and government, in the Stakeholder mobilization process. The paper clarifies how stakewatchers and stakeseekers can profoundly affect Stakeholder salience, especially in crises. The transposition and integration of the dynamic aspect of Stakeholder theory into the graphical representation strengthen the forceful pedagogical value of the Freeman’s Stakeholder graphical Model.

Stakeholder accountability or Stakeholder management a review of uk firms social and ethical accounting auditing and reporting seaar practices
Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, 2002Co-Authors: Ataur Rahman BelalAbstract:The main aim of this study is to undertake an evaluation of the initial wave of stand-alone social reports issued by the major market players in the UK using AA1000 as an evaluative tool, or benchmark, in order to ascertain the extent to which they conform to the provisions of AA1000, in particular the core principles of accountability and inclusivity. Applying the lens of the Stakeholder Model the paper examines to what extent contemporary SEAAR practices in the UK are likely to promote Stakeholder accountability, or whether they are simply exercises in Stakeholder management.

Corporate Social Responsibility in China: a Preferential Stakeholder Model and Effects
Business Strategy and the Environment, 2012Co-Authors: Jiyao XunAbstract:Research interest in examining corporate social responsibility (CSR) in developing economies is on the rise; however, our knowledge of the role of government in CSR remains limited. The aim of this paper is therefore to bridge this gap with an investigation into the specific CSR strategies that global firms have developed in the world's largest emerging economy and a nominally communist country, namely China. Drawing on institutional theory and a relational governance perspective, we posit that rather than adopting a canonical holistic CSR Stakeholder Model as typically observed in Western countries, these firms adopt a preferential Stakeholder Model using government-aimed and consumer-aimed CSR strategically. Our empirical study sampled 17 global retailers operating in China, with a dataset compiled to include their CSR web announcement data and firm performance data. The results of partial least squares Modelling suggest that only government-aimed CSR plays a salient role in enhancing retailers' performance. Maximizing Stakeholders’ Interests: An Empirical Analysis of the Stakeholder Approach to Corporate Governance
Business & Society, 2012Co-Authors: Silvia Ayuso, Miguel A. Rodriguez, Roberto Garcia‐castro, Miguel A. AriñoAbstract:This article makes two related contributions to Stakeholder theory and corporate governance theory. First, the authors seek to advance firm-level characterization of the emerging Stakeholder Model of corporate governance by analyzing two relevant dimensions of this Model: the corporate social responsibility (CSR) function at the board level and Stakeholder engagement. Second, the authors intend to examine the relationship between conformance to the Stakeholder Model of corporate governance and firm financial performance, taking into account the differences between countries, by using an international sample of large companies. The findings suggest that the traditional distinction between shareholder-centered and Stakeholder-centered corporate governance systems also has importance for the CSR strategy.

berle and means s the modern corporation and private property the military roots of a Stakeholder Model of corporate governance
Seattle University Law Review, 2019Co-Authors: Andrew Smith, Kevin D. Tennent, Jason RussellAbstract:The Modern Corporation and Private Property by Adolf Berle and Gardiner Means (1932) remains one of the most cited works in management studies. Our paper shows that Berle and Means espoused a Stakeholder theory of corporate governance that challenged the then-hegemonic idea that the sole purpose of a corporation is to create value for the shareholders. We argue that Berle and Means’ support for Stakeholder theory can be associated with their earlier service in the U.S. military, an organization which then inculcated an ethos of public service in its members. Our paper, which is based on archival research in the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library, seeks to relate changes in how U.S. military organizations have structured themselves with contemporaneous changes in the organization of private-sector firms.
