THE SYNERGIC ACTIVITY OF Staphylococcus Toxin*
2013Co-Authors: Harriet CAbstract:Knowledge of the synergic properties of Staphylococcus Toxin is comparatively recent: in 1933 Dr. E. L. Burky observed in rabbits immunized with Staphylococcus Toxin a reaction to the broth in which the Toxin had been produced. In explanation he suggested that the "growth activities of the staphylococci had separated from the medium some substance which, when attached to the Toxin, became antigenic. In brief, a broth haptene was attached to the Toxin."" If this were true, it occurred to him that other substances of little or no antigenicity might become antigenic when they were incubated with Staphylococcus Toxin. With this in mind, Burky ' ' injected rabbits with an incubated mixture of lens extract and Toxin, and succeeded in demonstrating cutaneous sensitivity, ocular sensitivity, and precipitins for the lens antigen. The combined action of Staphylococcus Toxin and rabbit muscle gave rise to dermatitis in the rabbit, and pollen extract plus Toxin produced precipitins for ragweed extract and a hypersensitive state in the rabbit. Lens extract, rabbit muscle, and ragweed extract without Staphylococcus Toxin did not exert a comparable effect in the control animals. Burky suggested that similar action of Staphylococcus Toxin emanating from a staphylococcal infection might explain some cases of endophthalmitis phacoanaphylactica, a condition found in persons sensitive to lens. In testing this hypothesis, Burky and Henton7 successfully employed a mixture of lens extract and Staphylococcus Toxin in the desensitization of two patients hypersensitive to lens. The treatment changed their cutaneous reaction to lens from positive to negative, while no one of ten patients treated with lens extract alone lost his sensitivity to lens. Staphylococcus Toxin-Mediated Motor Polyneuropathy

We report a case of S. aureus Toxin-mediated motor polyneuropathy in a patient presenting with acute flaccid quadriplegia. CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old female with mantle cell lymphoma on oral chemotherapy with ibrutinib presents with malaise and progressive ascending bilateral lower extremity weakness. Blood cultures resulted positive for methicillin-sensitive S. aureus, and she was initiated on antibiotics. Imaging studies and laboratory workup were negative for other causes of acute flaccid quadriplegia. Patient had complete resolution of her neurologic deficits with antibiotic therapy. It was determined that the likely diagnosis was Staphylococcus Toxin-mediated motor polyneuropathy. CONCLUSIONS: Staphylococcal-mediated motor polyneuropathy resulting in acute flaccid quadriplegia is a rare but treatable complication of bacteremia and should remain a diagnosis of exclusion

Studying aerococci impact on colonization of intestinal mucous membrane with vibrions and ability to destroy staphilococus Toxin

A series of experiments was carried out to study the protective effect of A. viridans vibrio in experimental vibroinfection and the introduction of Staphylococcus Toxin. In the intestine of animals receiving aerococcus competitive colonization takes place. Results of experiments on colonization in experimental animals which survived without signs of NAG infection showed that vibrios in the intestinal wall were almost absent, but a large number of aerococcus was found (2,5±0,2) *105. In cases of infectious process development, but in a mild form, aerococci prevailed over vibrios: (2,7±0,6) *104, and (2,0±0.2) *103 respectively. Aerococci injected subcutaneously can maintain livelihoods for several hours, destroying totally or partially introduced Staphylococcus exoToxin, reducing the strength of its lethal activit
