Hot Stuff - Kitchen appliances for induction Stove Tops
2014Co-Authors: Kajsa WestmanAbstract:The original intention of this project was to explore electronic kitchenware, remove the motor of the individual gadget and build a series of hand-cranked versions of the gadgets. After initial interviews and research into food, kitchen architecture, kitchenware, trends and time measurement statistics, it became clear that induction was a technology on the rise and is quickly moving into modern kitchens and homes. After more extensive research into the field of induction technology, the idea grew to use induction as means for creating rotation by using magnets. Together with an electrical engineer, a theory was created about how to be alter the existing technical construction of an induction cook top to make the magnetic rotation work. After this, the focus of the project turned to re-designing smaller kitchen appliances (kettle, juicer, whisk and toaster) into inert objects with existing functions kept in mind. The project’s end result was the conceptual design of cordless kitchen appliances that theoretically would work on a slightly changed induction Stove top. At the time when the project became public, it generated positive reactions by giving a whole new experience of both use and function of these household staple appliances, due to the combination of existing technology and common kitchen appliances. Sources of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in New Zealand homes: findings from a community randomized controlled trial of heater substitutions

As part of a large community intervention trial to improve space heating, we replaced ineffective heaters with more effective, non-polluting heaters. This paper assesses the contribution of heating and household factors to indoor NO2 in almost 350 homes and reports on the reduction in NO2 levels due to heater replacement. Homes using unflued gas heaters had more than three times the level of NO2 in living rooms [geometric mean ratio (GMR) = 3.35, 95% CI: 2.83-3.96, P < 0.001] than homes without unflued gas heaters, whereas homes using gas Stove-Tops had significantly elevated living room NO2 levels (GMR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.05-1.93, P = 0.02). Homes with heat pumps, flued gas heating, or enclosed wood burners had significantly lower levels of NO2 in living areas and bedrooms. In homes that used unflued gas heaters as their main form of heating at baseline, the intervention was associated with a two-third (67%) reduction in NO2 levels in living rooms, when compared with homes that continued to use unflued gas heaters. Reducing the use of unflued gas heating would substantially lower NO2 exposure in New Zealand homes. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Understanding the factors influencing indoor NO2 levels is critical for the assessment and control of indoor air pollution. This study found that homes that used unflued gas combustion appliances for heating and cooking had higher NO2 levels compared with homes where other fuels were used. These findings require institutional incentives to increase the use of more effective, less polluting fuels, particularly in the home environment.

Thermal Imaging for Assisted Living at Home: Improving Kitchen Safety

Green, Rafik GoubranAbstract:The Stove is one of the most frequent sources of fire accidents in the home, many of which are caused by human error or forgetfulness, a problem which may become more serious with advanced age. An automated Stove-top monitoring system could significantly increase kitchen safety. This study develops such a system, which uses a thermal camera to detect dangerous situations and behaviours, and alerts the user before a fire occurs. It is hoped that this system will serve to promote independent living among the elderly, leading to increased quality of life and decreased health care costs. The Stove-top monitoring system consists of four subsystems: burner status (active/inactive), burner temperature trend, pot presence/absence, and human activity detection. Twenty-two experiments were conducted using ceramic, electric coil, and gas Stove Tops. Rule-based algorithms were developed to combine the outputs of the four subsystems, and to alert the user or caregiver when a dangerous situation occurs. Excellent performance was achieved for alert generation (sensitivity = 94%, positive predictive value = 83%). Furthermore, no modifications are required to the Stove top, allowing this system to be retrofitted on any Stove top.

Cleaning and care additives for innovative consumer products

Examples for innovative products start from modern shower bowls and vitroceramic Stove Tops to the dramatic increase of plastics nowadays used in cars, e.g. the Smart. Even, cleaning products on their own can be innovative as the new odour caring systems prove, which are available now. The use of standard surfactants like ethoxylated alcohols is prohibitive in many new cleaning and care products. Recently available materials like short chain alkylpolyglusides, betaines and aminoxides for cleaning as well as an innovative emulsifying aminosiloxane for polishes and care products allow the formulator to achieve best performance without the risk of damaging plastic material. Detailed examples of application and formulation will be given.
