    Abstract:

    Background: The island of Madagascar and surrounding volcanic and coralline islands are considered to form a biodiversity hotspot with large numbers of unique taxa. The origin of this endemic fauna can be explained by two different factors: vicariance or over-water-dispersal. Deciphering which factor explains the current distributional pattern of a given taxonomic group requires robust phylogenies as well as estimates of divergence times. The lineage of Indian Ocean scops-owls (Otus: Strigidae) includes six or seven species that are endemic to Madagascar and portions of the Comoros and Seychelles archipelagos; little is known about the species limits, biogeographic affinities and relationships to each other. In the present study, using DNA sequence data gathered from six loci, we examine the biogeographic history of the Indian Ocean scops-owls. We also compare the pattern and timing of colonization of the Indian Ocean islands by scops-owls with divergence times already proposed for other bird taxa.

    Abstract:

    Molecular sexing of the diversified avian family Strigidae is difficult. Sex identification using the intron length difference between W and Z chromosomal CHD1 genes, as visualized by agarose gel electrophoreses, often produces ambiguous results. Here we describe a simple method for sexing a variety of Strigidae species using oligonucleotide microarrays, on which several sex-specific probes operated complementarily or in concert. The sex of 8 owl species was identified clearly on the microarrays through sequence recognition. This sequence-directed method can be easily applied to a wider range of Strigidae species.

    An outbreak of avian trichomoniasis caused by Trichomonas gallinae occurred on the Cape Peninsula and surrounds in seven species of diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey. The virulence of the parasite appears to be different from that reported in the northern hemisphere. It is suggested that this disease might negatively affect the reproductive success of certain species. A survey of the epidemiology of Trichomonas gallinae in the families Columbidae, Falconidae and Strigidae will illuminate its potential to affect the viability of future populations. 'n Uitbraak van trichomoniase veroorsaak deur Trichomonas gallinae het in die Kaapse Skiereiland en omliggende gebiede voorgekom, en sewe spesies van dag- en naglewende roofvoels is aangetas. Die virulensie van die parasiet blykbaar anders as die wat in die noordelike halfrond gerapporteer is. Daar word voorgestel dat hierdie siekte voortplantingsukses van sekere spesies negatief mag beinvloed.
