    The purpose of this demo is to foster a multi-level service oriented architecture for sensor networks that fully supports network dynamicity, auto-configuration, service discovery, and interoperability with legacy infrastructures. We consider a Surveillance Scenario in which the detection of an intruder, conducted within the range of a network of sensors, automatically triggers tracking activities.

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this work is to bridge the gap between high-end networked devices and wireless networks of ubiquituous and resource-constrained sensors and actuators by extensively applying Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) patterns. We present a multi-level approach that implements existing SOA standards on higher tiers, and propose a novel protocol stack, WSN-SOA, which brings the benefits of SOA to low capacity nodes without the overhead of XML-based technologies. This solution fully supports network dynamicity, auto-configuration, service discovery, device heterogeneity and interoperability with legacy architectures. As a proof-of-concept, we have studied a Surveillance Scenario in which the detection of an intruder, conducted within the range of a network of wireless sensors (e.g., MICAz from Crossbow), leads to the automatic triggering of tracking activities by a Linux-powered network camera and of alerts and video streams toward a control room.

    This paper describes the architecture of a visual Surveillance system that combines real time computer vision algorithms with logic programming to represent and recognize activities involving interactions amongst people, packages and the environments through which they move. The low level computer vision algorithms log primitive events of interest as observed facts, while the higher level Prolog based reasoning engine uses these facts in conjunction with predefined rules to recognize various activities in the input video streams. The system is illustrated in action on a multi-camera Surveillance Scenario that includes both security and safety violations.

    Abstract:

    A recent trend in research is to leverage on advanced simulation frameworks for the implementation and validation of video Surveillance and ambient intelligence algorithms. However, in order to guarantee a seamless transferability between the virtual and real worlds, the simulator is required to represent the real-world target Scenario in the best way possible. This includes on the one hand the appearance of the scene and the motion of objects, and, on the other hand, it should be accurate with respect to the sensing equipment that will be used in the acquisition phase. This paper focuses on the latter problem related to camera modeling and control, discussing how noise and distortions can be handled, and implementing an engine for camera motion control in terms of pan, tilt, and zoom, with particular attention to the video Surveillance Scenario.

    Abstract:

    In this paper we present a novel method to detect the presence of social interactions occurring in a Surveillance Scenario. The algorithm we propose complements motion features with proxemics cues, so as to link the human motion with the contextual and environmental information. The extracted features are analyzed through a multi-class SVM. Testing has been carried out distinguishing between casual and intentional interactions, where intentional events are further subdivided into normal and abnormal behaviors. The algorithm is validated on benchmark datasets, as well as on a new dataset specifically designed for interactions analysis.
