  • Social Psychology of Identities
    Annual Review of Sociology, 2000
    Co-Authors: Judith A. Howard
    Abstract:

Key Words social construction of identity, language, intersections of identities, social cognition, Symbolic Interaction s Abstract In this chapter I review the social psychological underpinnings of iden-tity, emphasizing social cognitive and Symbolic Interactionist perspectives and research, and I turn then to key themes of current work on identity—social psychological, so-ciological, and interdisciplinary. I emphasize the social bases of identity, particularly identities based on ethnicity, race, sexuality, gender, class, age, and (dis)ability, both separately and as they intersect. I also take up identities based on space, both geographic and virtual. I discuss struggles over identities, organized by social inequalities, nation-alisms, and social movements.

  • Boundaries and role conflict when work and family are colocated: A communication network and Symbolic Interaction approach
    Human Relations, 2004
    Co-Authors: Michelle Shumate, Janet Fulk
    Abstract:

As virtual workplaces and homework programs become more common, workers often find themselves inhabiting multiple worlds and multiple roles simultaneously. For these individuals, boundary transitions are both more frequent and more challenging. This paper expands current theory on work-related boundary transitions by: (1) conceptualizing role conflict in the logic of dynamic communication networks, and (2) reconceptualizing ritual and routine behavior in boundary transitions as not simply aids to mental transitions but also as communicative and Symbolic performance that is oriented toward other role senders. Underlying the framework is the concept of time-space paths (Giddens, 1979; Heidegger, 1996) as critical elements of role boundary identification and demarcation. This paper contributes to a better understanding of boundary issues for homeworkers by using a communication framework and emphasiz- ing the agency that homeworkers have to mold others’ expectations.

  • cooperation as communicative accomplishment a Symbolic Interaction analysis of an improvised jazz concert
    Communication Studies, 1992
    Co-Authors: David T Bastien, Todd J Hostager
    Abstract:

Weick (1983) suggests that understanding prototypical cases of organizational communication increases our understanding beyond the event itself. In Weick (1990) he further argues that the jazz orchestra is one such case. Following Weick's call, this is a study of a jazz concert performed by a zero‐history group of seasoned professionals. The performance was videotaped, and one of the musicians acted as a participant‐informant, explaining instant‐by‐instant interpretive processes through the course of the concert. The two forms of data, videotape and participant‐informant, are analyzed in light of Couch's (1986) theory of elementary forms and Miller, Hintz, and Couch's (1975) theory of the elements of sociation.

  • the formation of political sub climates predictions from social identity structuration and Symbolic Interaction
Journal of Business and Psychology, 2005
Co-Authors: Darren C Treadway, Garry L Adams, Joseph M Goodman
    Abstract:

Merging the climate and politics literatures, this study evaluates whether organizations have a singular, shared political climate or whether sub-climates, “pockets of politics,” exist. Sub-climate formation is investigated by utilizing both political and climate explanations to determine the level of formation. The sample consisted of 891 employees of a retail services firm and the results of the study indicate that political climates do exist and may be best distinguished by defining the employee’s Interactional patterns.

  • caring relationships in science classrooms a Symbolic Interaction study
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1996
Co-Authors: Meta Van Sickle, Barbara S Spector
    Abstract:

This Symbolic Interaction study was designed to identify and discover key components about caring science teachers. Grounded theory was generated that emphasizes the notion that caring is important in today's schools and provides insight into what happens in science classrooms. A key pattern that emerged regarding science teachers who are perceived to be caring is that they build a variety of relationships. The kinds of relationships described as caring by the teachers in this study include teacher-student, student-student, and teacher-content. The Interaction and integration of these three kinds of relationships results in teacher-student-content relationships. The emergence of relationships and illustrations of the importance of these relationships is described herein. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
