We used PalTalk, an Internet text and audio chat client from AVM Software, Inc. (New York, NY), to offer our students live virtual classroom sessions within a unit of our online distance learning M.Sc. program in Healthcare Informatics. On-demand replays of audio excerpts from the sessions were also provided to accommodate absenteeism and for student review. Five students completed an evaluation questionnaire. Our results highlighted the potential merits of using Synchronous conferencing to assist in fostering a sense of belonging to one supportive learning community among distance learners and improve educational outcomes. Students were very positive toward the real-time human interaction and voted for a 95/5 (aSynchronous/Synchronous percentages) blended delivery approach for a typical unit in our program. They also praised PalTalk's voice quality and ease of use. This paper presents educational and technological perspectives about this experiment in the form of a state-of the- art review, without intending to be statistically rigorous. However, robust research evidence is still required to convince educators fully about the benefits of Synchronous Communication tools and help them decide on the most suitable solutions for their particular circumstances.

The average variance of cross-correlations between sequences is used as a measure for sequence design. The authors search for sets of sequences that minimize the probability of symbol detection error, given that there is imperfect synchronization among the signals, that is, the signals are quasi-Synchronous. Orthogonal sequences based on the Sylvester-type Hadamard matrices (Walsh functions) are shown to provide a significant improvement over the case where a Hadamard (orthogonal) matrix is chosen at random. Computer searches suggest that this set of codes is optimal with respect to the above measure. The issue of chip pulse shaping is investigated. Optimal pulses designed to minimize multiple-access interference in quasi-Synchronous systems are obtained for various bandwidths and are shown to provide a large improvement over the raised cosine pulses. A multicarrier signaling scheme is introduced in order to reduce chip level synchronization offsets between the users. >

The authors search for sets of sequences that minimize the probability of bit detection error, given that there is imperfect synchronization among the signals. Orthogonal sequences based on the Sylvester-type Hadamard matrices (Walsh functions) are shown to provide a large improvement over the case where an orthogonal set is chosen at random. For these sequences closed form expressions are derived for the average bit error rate. Computer searches indicate that this set of codes has special properties with respect to minimizing the average cross-correlations between the different signals for small errors in chip synchronization. It appears that these codes are optimal. A multi-carrier signalling scheme designed to help synchronize the CDMA signals at the chip level is also discussed.
