  • The role of second-neighbor effects in photoemission: Are silicon surfaces and interfaces special?
    Applied Physics Letters, 1998
    Co-Authors: K. Z. Zhang, Kyle Erik Litz, M. M. Banaszak Holl, Fenton R. Mcfeely
    Abstract:

A widely used assignment scheme for Si 2p2p core-level photoemission studies of silicon oxidation relies solely on the formal oxidation state of the silicon. The Tacit Assumption of this assignment methodology is that second-neighbor effects have no measurable effect on observed Si 2p2p binding energies. In this letter, new experiments are combined with literature precedents to make the case that the second-neighbor effects play an important role in determining binding energy shifts. © 1998 American Institute of Physics

  • Heterogeneous Multi-Robot Dialogues for Search Tasks
    2018
Co-Authors: Thomas K. Harris, Satanjeev Banerjee, Alexander I. Rudnicky
    Abstract:

Dialogue agents are often designed with the Tacit Assumption that at any one time, there is but one agent and one human, and that their communication channel is exclusive. We are interested in examining situations in which multiple heterogeneous dialogue agents need to interact with a human interlocutor, and where the communication channel becomes necessarily shared. To this end we have constructed a multi-agent dialogue test-bed on which to study dialogue coordination issues in multirobot scenarios.

  • A research platform for multi-agent dialogue dynamics
RO-MAN 2004. 13th IEEE International Workshop on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (IEEE Catalog No.04TH8759), 1
Co-Authors: Thomas K. Harris, Satanjeev Banerjee, Alexander I. Rudnicky, J. Sison, K. Bodine, Alan W. Black
    Abstract:

Dialogue agents are often designed with the Tacit Assumption that at any time, there is only one agent and one human, and that their communication channel is exclusive. We are interested in evaluating complications that arise when multiple heterogeneous dialogue agents interact with one or more human interlocutors, and their communication channel is necessarily shared. In This work we describe a multi-agent dialogue test-bed that we have implemented to study such dialogue coordination issues. We also describe an initial pilot study that uses this test-bed to experiment with a very simple addressee disambiguation algorithm.

  • The Huawei and Snowden Questions: Can Electronic Equipment from Untrusted Vendors be Verified? Can an Untrusted Vendor Build Trust into Electronic Equipment?
    Springer, 2018
    Co-Authors: Olav Lysne
    Abstract:

This book answers two central questions: firstly, is it at all possible to verify electronic equipment procured from untrusted vendors? Secondly, can I build trust into my products in such a way that I support verification by untrusting customers? In separate chapters the book takes readers through the state of the art in fields of computer science that can shed light on these questions. In a concluding chapter it discusses realistic ways forward. In discussions on cyber security, there is a Tacit Assumption that the manufacturer of equipment will collaborate with the user of the equipment to stop third-party wrongdoers. The Snowden files and recent deliberations on the use of Chinese equipment in the critical infrastructures of western countries have changed this. The discourse in both cases revolves around what malevolent manufacturers can do to harm their own customers, and the importance of the matter is on par with questions of national security. This book is of great interest to ICT and security professionals who need a clear understanding of the two questions posed in the subtitle, and to decision-makers in industry, national bodies and nation states
