Getting There Together: Group Navigation in Distributed Virtual Environments
IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2020Co-Authors: Tim Weissker, Pauline Bimberg, Bernd FroehlichAbstract:We analyzed the design space of group navigation tasks in distributed virtual environments and present a framework consisting of techniques to form groups, distribute responsibilities, navigate together, and eventually split up again. To improve joint navigation, our work focused on an extension of the Multi-Ray Jumping technique that allows adjusting the spatial formation of two distributed users as part of the Target Specification process. The results of a quantitative user study showed that these adjustments lead to significant improvements in joint two-user travel, which is evidenced by more efficient travel sequences and lower task loads imposed on the navigator and the passenger. In a qualitative expert review involving all four stages of group navigation, we confirmed the effective and efficient use of our technique in a more realistic use-case scenario and concluded that remote collaboration benefits from fluent transitions between individual and group navigation.

Rather than specifying the Target in the first frame of a video by a bounding box, we propose to track the object based on a natural language Specification of the Target, which provides a more natural human-machine interaction as well as a means to improve tracking results. We define three variants of tracking by language Specification: one relying on lingual Target Specification only, one relying on visual Target Specification based on language, and one leveraging their joint capacity. To show the potential of tracking by natural language Specification we extend two popular tracking datasets with lingual descriptions and report experiments. Finally, we also sketch new tracking scenarios in surveillance and other live video streams that become feasible with a lingual Specification of the Target.

A Novel Type of Phase-Shift Controlled Wireless V2H with Dual-Active Single-Ended Converters

Firstly, the operation of bidirectional wireless power transmission and the configuration of the wireless V2H system is illustrated. Secondly, a design strategy for satisfying the Target Specification of 3kW transfer power and 85kHz operating frequency are described. Then, problems about stability of operating frequency and robustness to power component variation are discussed from a practical point of view. Illustrated is that the transfer power is essentially decided by a phase difference between the power feeding and the power receiving circuit. Finally, proposed is a variable-power constant-frequency single-ended bidirectional converter with dual-active phase-shift control. Since the wireless V2H system can be controlled under a constant operating frequency, it is easy to confirm the specified frequency band to international standards. The high-power wireless transfer is achieved by the optimum phase difference in spite of the low coupling coefficient between transfer coils. Furthermore, the proposed system secures the stability of the power transfer operation against the variation of parameters as compared with the previous frequency-controlled system. In addition, an improved system with a new PLL control which doesn't need phase detector is discussed. Then, the newly developed low-cost single-ended wireless V2H system is suitable for mass production.
