  • Bedroom Politics, the Social Media Ulcer: An application of the unhu/ubuntu Philosophy in light of the Technological Determinism and Cultural Imperialism Theory.
IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2014
Co-Authors: Innocent Fungai Chiyadzwa, Edmore Dube Dr Edmore Dube
    Abstract:

This paper strove to ascertain whether local social media platforms that focus on dating and sex issues are eroding the cultural values and norms of the Shona people and the push factors for such uses. While it is unprecedented that the developing countries have been importing hardware and software from advanced countries, the implications this has on social values and norms is worth an academic enquiry. The empowering, liberative and emancipatory nature of the internet and social media is undoubted when it comes to the enhancement of democratic participation and diversity of views in the “electronic public sphere,” it is the uncontrolled content production‟s consequences for the humanness and moral value of the Zimbabwean community that is at stake. The study has made use of the Lurking Garanyanya, the Technological Determinism and Cultural Imperialism Theories in its application of the unhu/ubuntu philosophy in an academic endeavour to determine the user-friendly nature of the social media with regards the Shona conception of „bedroom politics.‟ The enquiry has established that issues dealing with sexuality have for time immemorial been a private matter and public reference to sexuality is anathema to the Zimbabwean audience.

  • Thorstein Veblen's theory of institutional change: beyond Technological Determinism
The European Journal of the History of Economic Thought, 2003
    Co-Authors: Olivier Brette
    Abstract:

The article presents a reappraisal of Veblen's theory of institutional change challenging the thesis of Technological Determinism, supported by some commentators of Veblen. According to this latter interpretation, Veblen would consider institutional change as stemming from an exogenous transformation of the material and technical environment. But such a thesis disregards the significance of cultural Determinism in Veblen's system. Taking this into account leads to argue that Veblen analyses institutional change as an emergent effect of the dynamics of interactions between instincts, institutions and the infrastructural conditions. Finally, Veblen's theory of institutional change proves consistent with his research programme, aiming at producing a cumulative and on-teleological theory of institutional evolution, a theory in which behavioural determinants of human beings would be the main explicative variables.

  • determining social change the role of Technological Determinism in the collective action framing of hackers
    New Media & Society, 2013
    Co-Authors: Johan Soderberg
    Abstract:

This article takes the political engagement of hackers as a prism for examining the relations between Technological determinist thinking and collective action. The concept ‘collective action framing’ is borrowed from social movement theory to describe how hackers have appropriated notions of a post-industrial, information society in their struggles against intellectual property laws and state censorship. Hackers have reintroduced an element of conflict and antagonism into otherwise politically innocuous visions of post-industrialism. This residual of antagonism can be traced back to the roots of the post-industrial myth in Marxist, historical materialist theory. By exploring these origins, the article proceeds to compare the hopes invested by hackers in the emancipatory force of information technology with the earlier beliefs of labour movements that the forces of history were on their side. Building on this comparison it is argued that Technological Determinism does not always lead to political resignati...

  • theoretical frameworks for the study of structuring processes in group decision support systems adaptive structuration theory and self organizing systems theory
    Human Communication Research, 1993
Co-Authors: Noshir Contractor, David R Seibold
    Abstract:

Most theoretical perspectives used to explain the use and effects of communication and decision support technologies assume some form of Technological Determinism. Inconsistencies in the research findings have prompted theorists to reject the assumptions of Technological Determinism in favor of an emergent perspective. To date, only adaptive Structuration theory (AST) offers the promise of satisfying two requirements for explanation based on an emergent perspective: recursivity and unique effects. The current article reviews the application of AST to the study of a relatively recent technology in the work place—group decision support systems (GDSS). Next it discusses AST's challenge to capture, dynamically and precisely, GDSS processes and outcomes. In response to these concerns, self-organizing systems theory (SOST) is reviewed and applied to problematic areas in GDSS research with the aim of advancing AST.
