Technology Push strategies and their consequences on sustainable development in manufacturing industries

The study reveals that adjustment of viable TP strategies may help towards reckoning key skills in the framework of a company. In addition to this, the review emphasises that the TP strategies has significant impact on the sustainable development of the manufacturing industries. It has been observed that the role of TP in manufacturing companies has not been much reported. A synthesis can be established with satisfaction levels of TP strategies, which may help to secure concrete objectives and interests of an organisation. The paper reviews various attributes of TP through a number of publications in this field.

The study critically examines the effectiveness of TP strategies in manufacturing enterprises.,An extensive survey of 92 companies has been executed to identify improvements made by TP strategies to achieve sustainable development in manufacturing industries. The companies in the survey include medium− and large−scale manufacturing enterprises. The correlations between various TP strategies and sustainable development indicators are evaluated and validated using various numerical methods and tools.,The focus of the paper is on the distinguishable contributions made by TP strategies such as innovative capability; research and development; corporate strategy; and export orientation toward achieving sustainable development. The inter−relationships between different TP practices with sustainable development indicators have been evaluated to efficiently manage the objectives of growth and sustainability. The research concludes that two TP strategies, namely, corporate strategy and innovative capability, are found to be substantial in the present context. These strategies have emerged as a foundation for several development initiatives and actively support manufacturing industries in accomplishing sustainable development. however, enterprises need to work more actively on improving less significant issues of TP.,In the present investigation, contributions made by TP practices have been evaluated to accomplish sustainable development in Indian manufacturing industries. Hence, the results obtained may need some modifications before applying to other countries. Moreover, issue−wise independent modeling can also be performed to assess the importance of TP strategies under specific orientations.,The research gives priority to enhancement in the planning among various TP practices and sustainable development indicators in the industries to impart TP as an important practice to meet various challenges of competent markets worldwide.,It has been exhibited from the observations that adequate TP strategies can efficiently contribute toward recognition of sustainable development to compete in the highly progressive global market. The results of various inter−relationships among TP practices and sustainable development indicators represent the effectiveness of TP practices for accomplishment of social and organizational objectives.,It has been investigated in the present study that TP practices are significant initiatives taken by the manufacturing industries for performance improvement and sustainable development. The present study has been carried out in large and medium scale manufacturing enterprises to evaluate the performance of various issues of TP-DP strategies and sustainable development. It also includes the performance of companies based on critical barriers in transitions between TP and DP strategies for sustainable development. The research exploits statistical and mathematical tools to extract substantial results. It is apparent from the present study that manufacturing industries have been able to improve the business performance by practicing comprehensive TP-DP initiatives and most of them have successfully achieved the sustainable development. The study adds value to the area of sustainable development in manufacturing industries by calculating percent points score (PPS) for each issue of Technology Push, demand pull and sustainable development.

Design/methodology/approach The factors that affect the transitions have been extracted and analyzed using factor analysis technique. For the purpose, various critical barriers are grouped together based on their relevance to TP-DP strategies. The responses to critical barriers have been collected from different Indian manufacturing organizations practicing TP-DP strategies, using a well-framed TP-DP questionnaire. Further, the responses are analyzed using factor analysis which improved the data interpretation. Findings Four latent factors were extracted from critical barriers and revealed that the manufacturing organizations face these barriers in transitions between TP-DP strategies. The recognition of the outcomes of critical barriers has been perceived to be substantial in the present context. Originality/value The research concludes that TP-DP strategies in Indian manufacturing industries encounter relevant critical barriers for accomplishing sustainable development. The outcomes of the study will help TP-DP practitioners, HR executives and organizational managers in manufacturing companies to develop clear understanding about the significant TP-DP strategies to be followed comprehensively for realization of sustainable development. The manufacturing organizations will be able to formulate and express their policies and issues in a more pertinent manner. Hence, the knowledge obtained from the empirical examination of critical barriers in transitions between TP and DP strategies will be helpful in improving the overall performance of manufacturing industries involved in the present study.

Earlier studies revealed the significance of letting MP shape the development of Technology, but this frequently leads to incremental innovation and would be primarily unfavorable to nationwide competitiveness, taking the focus away from primitive research, the utilization of which is responsible for economic progress. TP-oriented manufacturing enterprises are established to commercialize an explicit or an emerging Technology. This type of orientation generally comprises a resource-based “probe and learn” methodology to enter into market but now in this hypercompetitive market, a profitable industry balances its technological target with valuable management strategies. The purpose of this research chapter is to have an insight of shifts between TP and MP strategies in manufacturing enterprises for sustainable development. A research has been planned to develop a conceptual framework to explore shifts between TP and DP strategies for sustainable development in manufacturing enterprises and the research proposal is presented in this chapter. The chapter reveals the various attributes that govern the shift of TP strategy to MP strategy and vice versa in an organization with the ultimate goal of sustainable development. As per the complexity of context and the fact that such studies can be performed primarily by closely treading and analyzing the techniques adopted by various organizations, it was considered appropriate to carry out the study of shifts between TP and MP strategies for sustainable development in manufacturing industries.

Design/methodology/approach The key aspects based on their relevance to TP-DP strategies have been extracted from literature review. The aspects were utilized to design a well-framed TP-DP questionnaire. An extensive survey in medium- and large-scale manufacturing industries operating in India has been executed through questionnaire. The responses to various factors were collected and the data obtained have been analyzed using analytical and graphical comparisions. Findings The recognition of the outcomes of transitions was perceived to be substantial. The research concludes that DP strategies dominates TP strategies in the present context. These strategies have emerged as a foundation for several development initiatives and actively support manufacturing industries in accomplishing sustainable development. Originality/value The analysis shows that TP-DP strategies in Indian manufacturing industries encounter significant transitions at different stages of their development.

Findings The focus of the paper is on the distinguishable contributions made by TP-DP practices like innovative capability, research and development, corporate strategy, export orientation, stringent implementation of government regulations, transforming capabilities, unionized labor and customer attributes toward achieving sustainable development in manufacturing industries. The inter-relationships between different TP-DP practices with sustainable development parameters are evaluated to effectively manage the goals and objectives of industries related to sustainability and growth. However, it is also acknowledged that manufacturing firms need to work more actively on managing certain practices of TP-DP. Research limitations/implications In the present investigation, contributions made by TP-DP practices are evaluated to accomplish sustainable development in Indian manufacturing industries. Hence, the results obtained may need some modifications before applying to other countries. Moreover, issue-wise independent modeling can also be performed to assess the importance of TP-DP practices under specific orientations. Technology and trend management at the interface of Technology Push and market pull

Maier, Maximilian Hofmann, Alexander BremAbstract:Technology Push and market pull innovation strategies are playing an important role for the effective management of ideas, technologies, and trends. The coexistence of these two approaches led to many debates and the focus switched several times from putting more effort into Technology Push aspects to fostering market pull approaches in the last decades. Still, there is no in-depth exploration of the interface of Technology Push and market pull and only few conceptual models are dealing with the connection between Technology Push and market pull in particular. Therefore, this study puts an exploratory focus on the innovation management processes of a global outdoor manufacturer with a special emphasis on the interface between Technology Push and market pull. From the case findings and our literature we conceptualise a non-linear innovation model that systematically integrates market pull and Technology Push activities. The model was tested for its practical applicability by reflecting it against the case company's organisational capabilities. Further research implications are discussed as well as implications for the management of the innovation process in practice, which highlights especially the importance of an innovation competence team.
