  • emerging in a digital world a decade review of media use effects and gratifications in emerging adulthood
    Emerging adulthood, 2013
Co-Authors: Sarah M Coyne, Laura M Padillawalker, Emily Howard
    Abstract:

This article reviews the recent literature on uses, effects, and gratifications of media during emerging adulthood. We examine traditional media forms, including Television, Films, video games, music, and books, and also newer media, such as cell phones, social networking sites, and other Internet use. We find that emerging adults spend more time using the media than they spend doing any other activity, with the most time being spent on the Internet and listening to music. We also find that exposure to certain types of media content can influence both positive and negative outcomes in emerging adulthood, including, aggressive and prosocial behavior, body image, sexual behavior, friendship quality, and academic achievement. We also show that emerging adults use the media to gratify certain needs; key among these are for autonomy, identity, and intimacy needs. Finally, we discuss areas for future research involving media and emerging adulthood.

  • The impact of Television Films on a child’s learning of social behaviour
    2008
    Co-Authors: Ambraziejienė Ingrida
    Abstract:

Šiuolaikiniame informacijos amžiuje televizija tampa vienu iš vaiko ugdymo veiksnių, greta kitų veiksnių – mokyklos ir šeimos, kurie suformuoja ir įtvirtina kultūrines bei socialines vertybes. Patirtis, gaunama iš televizijos filmų, tampa reikšmingesne, negu gaunama iš tėvų. Televizijos filmų vaidmens reikšmingumo suvokimą pabrėžia socialinio išmokimo teorijos kontekstas (A. Bandura, 1977), kurios pagrindinis teiginys – individas socialinio elgesio išmoksta stebėdamas.( Ši teorija sudaro metodologinį tyrimo pagrindą). Tyrimo problema –televizijos filmai daro poveikį vaiko socialinio elgesio išmokimui (išmokimui stebint). Tyrimo objektas – televizijos filmų poveikis vaiko socialinio elgesio išmokimui. Darbo tikslas - atskleisti televizijos filmų daromą poveikį vaiko socialinio elgesio išmokimui. Uždaviniai: 1. Apibrėžti pagrindinius vaiko socializaciją lemiančius veiksnius. 2. Atskleisti elgesio modelio poveikį vaiko socialinio elgesio išmokimui. 3. Charakterizuoti išmokimo stebint televizijos filmus požymius. 4. Nustatyti 10-12 metų amžiaus vaikų išmokimą, stebint televizijos filmus. 5. In our contemporary times of informatics Television has become one of the factors of a child's education, together with other factors like schools and families, which form and consolidate cultural and social values. The experience gained from Television, becomes more important than experience gained from parents. A comprehension of the importance of Television Films' role is emphasized in the context of social learning theory (A. Bandura, 1977), which main statement is that an individual learns social behaviour by watching. (This theory makes the background of methodological research). The main problem of the research – Television Films have an influence on a child's learning of social behaviour (learning by watching). The object of research – the influence of Television Films on a child's learning of social behaviour. The aim of the work - to reveal the impact of Television Films on a child's learning of social behaviour. The main tasks: 1. To define the main factors determinating child's socialisation. 2. To reveal the influence of a model of behaviour on a child‘s learning of social behaviour. 3. To describe the main features of learning by watching. 4. To identify the learning of ten to twelve-year-old children by whatching Films. 5. To highlight the impact of Television Films on childrens' emotions. The methods of research: the analysis of scientific literature, questionnaire survey, observation and interview. Seeking to reveal the influence of Television Films on a child's learning of social behaviour, quantitavive and qualitative methodologies were matched, the descriptive type of research was chosen. The participans of the research were 100 schoolchildren from the fifth class learning in a secondary school of Marijampole and 2 younger age respondens- four-year-old and nine-year-old.After the research it was found that children spend 1/4 of the day watching TV Films, therefore it has a big impact on a child‘s way of developement as an individual. Most often children watch comedies and adventure Films, which spread good and warm atmosphere. However, horror and action Films, Films marked with a letter „S“, which are watched by a large number of children, invoke fear and aggressive thouhgts, raise a cult of force and violence, distort the true feelings and so forming gender stereotypes. TV Films have an impact on a child‘s feelings and emotions, invoke verbal and nonverbal reactions appearing in a kind of joy or sadness, anger or fear, mystification or reveries. Watching TV Films and immitating a model of behaviour, a child forms his „I“, i.e. develops himself as an individual. The results of the research will be presented to the participants. The reseach results will be will be used in parents‘ education regarding the question of influence of TV Films on childrens' learning of social behaviour.Vytauto Didžiojo universiteta

  • nineteenth century american fiction on screen the movies in the rue morgue adapting edgar allan poe for the screen
    2007
    Co-Authors: Paul Woolf
    Abstract:

Poe's paradoxical popularity Type the name Edgar Allan Poe (1809–49) into the search facility of the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) and you will discover that there have been 141 cinema and Television Films based, to varying degrees, on Poe's works. This is more than Herman Melville (25 entries in the database), Henry James (67) and even Mark Twain (83). While not an entirely scientific exercise, this does suggest that Poe is the most-filmed American author of the nineteenth century. Bare statistics, however, only tell us so much. Poe is a uniquely popular figure for the screen industry. But, in comparison with other major authors, it is to a greater than usual extent and with greater than usual frequency that feature-film and Television versions of Poe's works depart radically from the texts from which they claim to originate. This is clear from my own viewing, and from books such as Ronald L. Smith's Poe In The Media (1990) and Don G. Smith's comprehensive critical filmography The Poe Cinema (1999). Usually when one watches a screen adaptation of a familiar literary text, one looks for changes to the storyline, details that have been modified, and characters that have been conflated or dropped completely. With Poe adaptations, it is sometimes more a question of spotting the few details, characters, and elements of plot that have been retained at all. Rather than adaptations, many are best described simply as new stories featuring a scattering of Poe's ideas.
