We report the first occurrences of the warm-water shipworm Teredo bartschi in Mersin, Turkey, and Olhao, Portugal. The colonisation of the site in Mersin is likely to have occurred by rafting adults originating from the Red Sea, which passed through the Suez Canal (lessepsian migrants). T. bartschi might have been introduced in Olhao Harbour, Portugal, either by rafting adults with larvae transported by currents or by larvae transported by ships in ballast water. These seem to be the first published records of established T. bartschi populations in the Mediterranean and in northeast Atlantic.

Diversity, environmental requirements, and biogeography of bivalve wood-borers (Teredinidae) in European coastal waters

Yet no comprehensive study was ever carried out on these organisms in European coastal waters. Thus, the aims of this study were to: investigate the diversity of teredinids in European coastal waters; map their past and recent distributions to detect range expansion or contraction; determine salinity-temperature ( S-T ) requirements of species; flag, for future monitoring, the species that pose the greatest hazard for wooden structures. Results A total of nine teredinid species were found established in European coastal waters. Seven were considered cryptogenic, of unknown origin, and two were considered alien species. Teredo navalis and NotoTeredo norvagica were the species with the widest distribution in European waters. Recently, T. navalis has been reported occurring further east in the Baltic Sea but it was not found at a number of sites on the Atlantic coast of southern Europe. The Atlantic lineage of Lyrodus pedicellatus was the dominant teredinid in the southern Atlantic coast of Europe. In the Mediterranean six teredinid species occurred in sympatry, whereas only three of these occurred in the Black Sea. The species that pose the greatest hazard to wooden maritime structures in European coastal areas are T. navalis and the two lineages of L. pedicellatus . Conclusions Combined data from field surveys and from the literature made it possible to determine the diversity of established teredinid species and their past and recent distribution in Europe. The environmental requirements of species, determined using climatic envelopes, produced valuable information that assisted on the explanation of species distribution. In addition, the observed trends of species range extension or contraction in Teredo navalis and in the two lineages of Lyrodus pedicellatus seem to emphasise the importance of temperature and salinity as determinants of the distribution of teredinids, whereas their life history strategy seems to play an important role on competition. Teredo navalis and pedicellatus -like Lyrodus species should be monitored due to their destructive capability. The two alien species may expand further their distribution range in Europe, becoming invasive, and should also be monitored.

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2009Co-Authors: Simon M Cragg, M C Jumel, Fuad A Alhorani, Ian W HendyAbstract:In the Gulf of Aqaba, the slow, unidirectional surface inflow of oligotrophic waters from the Red Sea may limit the dispersal of planktotrophic larvae, thus favouring brooded over planktonic development. A site at the northern end of the Gulf was used to examine recruitment by wood borers of the family Teredinidae (Bivalvia) with brooded or planktotrophic larvae. Wood panels exposed for 4 months at depths from 6 m to 36 m became colonised by the brooding Teredo bartschi and a few individuals of the planktotrophic Bankia carinata. Driftwood at the site contained T. bartschi and the brooding isopod wood-borer Limnoria tripunctata. No significant variation in intensity of recruitment with depth was detected. The size distributions of shells within the panels were unimodal, suggesting a single period of recruitment, but shell size was negatively correlated with the degree of crowding. For T. bartschi, the length and width of pallets proved to be good predictors of shell diameter. Pallet width also defines the diameter of the siphonal opening. Across the range of animal sizes sampled, this opening tended to be larger in T. bartschi than that calculated from reported widths of Teredo navalis, a species which grows in more plankton-rich waters. Groups of larval shells, which averaged 66 μm in width, were found on the inner surface of about 7% of all adult shells investigated. They had the characteristic D outline and pitted surface of a prodissoconch I shell with or without a small amount of prodissoconch II growth. These would have resulted from a single spawning event at about the time of year that nutrient-rich waters mix into the upper water column. At Aqaba, a sink population of T. bartschi is likely to be maintained by adults rafting from the Red Sea. These observations build a picture of the life history strategy of T. bartschi: brooding with maternal rather than egg-derived nutrition; release of a non-feeding pediveliger; limited larval dispersal; rapid development of a synchronous brooding capability; dispersal by rafting as adults.

an investigation into Teredo and 6to4 transition mechanisms traffic analysis

The IPv6 transition mechanisms such as Teredo and 6to4 allow IPv4 hosts to connect to IPv6 hosts. On the other hand, they increase network complexity and render ineffective many methods to observe IP traffic. In this paper, we modified our flow-based measurement system to involve transition mechanisms information to provide full IPv6 visibility. Our traffic analysis focuses on IPv6 tunneled traffic and uses data collected over one week in the Czech national research and education network. The results expose various traffic characteristics of native and tunneled IPv6 traffic, among others the TTL and HOP limit distribution, geolocation aspect of the traffic, and list of Teredo servers used in the network. Furthermore, we show how the traffic of IPv6 transition mechanisms has evolved since 2010.

Namun implementasi IPv6 secara menyeluruh akan terealisasi dalam waktu yang lama (secara bertahap, tidak secara langsung), karena penggunaan IPv6 memerlukan modifikasi keseluruhan infrastruktur Internet. Di sinilah teknologi transisi berperan. Teknologi transisi IPv4 ke IPv6 secara garis besar terbagi menjadi tiga jenis, yaitu dual-stack,translation, dan tunneling. Dalam tugas akhir ini yang akan dipakai metode transisi tunnelingkarena tunneling memungkinkan coexistence antara dua cloud IP (IPv4 dan IPv6). Transisi IPv6 diperlukan untuk menghubungkan jaringan IPv4 dengan IPv6 selama masa migrasi.Dan yang akan dibahas dalam tugas akhir ini adalah metode transisi tunneling 6in4 dan Teredo. Dibandingkan metode tunneling mana yang lebih baik antara 6in4 dan Teredo.Untuk mengetahui dilakukan beberapa pengujian dalam jaringan ftp. Parameter yang akan diamati dalam selama pengujian adalah throughput dan latency. Dalam tugas akhir ini dibandingkan performansi mana yang lebih baik nilai throughput dan latency nya tunneling dengan metode 6in4 atau dengan metode Teredo.Perbandingan dilakukan dengan melakukan percobaan.Hasil data penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa nilai latency untuk metode transisi ipv6 Teredo lebih besar dari pada tunneling 6in4,sedangkan nilai throughtput pada kedua metode transisi tersebut cenderung sama dan sebanding, Teredo memiliki nilai througput yang lebil kecil. Kata kunci :Tunneling, FTP, 6in4, Teredo.
