    Abstract:

    In this paper, we propose a framework named ``UbiREMOTE'' for controlling information appliances connected to a home network with a unified and intuitive user interface from a remote place.The UbiREMOTE framework provides users with a way to control appliances in a home through a virtual space drawn on a mobile Terminal Screen which reflects the latest conditions of the real appliances and the rooms in the home. With UbiREMOTE, a user controls appliances by (1) moving to the front of an appliance, (2) choosing the appliance to control and (3) pushing buttons on the virtual remote controller which imitates the real remote controller for the appliance or the real console.In this paper, we propose a method to improve the drawing speed of 3D virtual space on mobile Terminals and a method for automatically reflecting condition changes of the real space in the virtual space.We implemented the methods and evaluated the performance. The results showed that the proposed methods can be practically used on small mobile Terminals.

    Abstract:

    DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting, Handheld) is based on the terrestrial version of DVB, i.e. DVB-T, and it has been designed especially for the moving environment. The performance of the system takes into account the variations of the power levels and bursty interferences of the radio path. DVBH is adequate especially for the small handsets as the typical Terminal Screen size requires only a fraction of the bit stream capacity compared to DVB-T which is meant for the fixed reception with the antennas located in rooftop. DVB-H uses OFDM and is typically operated in a Single Frequency Network (SFN) mode. One of the important aspects of the use of a single frequency is that the transmitters are aligned via e.g. satellite systems synchronization signal. This means that all transmitters in the network are transmitting at the same time and a gain can occur in the areas where more than one signal are arriving at the same point in time, within the time width of the guard interval, and space (multipath fading). This gain can be described as a combined sine wave consisting of multipath radio waves arriving in at a point in time and space with a different phase. This phase difference is caused by the time delay which the mobile device is receiving the multipath components. This time delay can be can be visualized via the frequency response. This paper presents field test methodology for the in-depth performance analysis for the estimate of the SFN gain from drive test results. By applying the presented methodology, the estimation of the SFN gain can be taken into account in the DVBH radio link budget in realistic way.

    Abstract:

    Bitrate control in video content is one of the key features of the emerging content/context aware network. Within the content/context aware network framework, network devices are able to adapt video content to fit network (bandwidth …) and Terminal (Screen size …) constraints. But reducing video spatial resolution for video-to-Terminal adaptation also impacts the bitrate of the video which is a video-to-network adaptation. In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the impact of spatial downsizing as a technique to reduce the video bitrate. We study the tradeoff between traditional bitrate adaptation and spatial downsizing through various use case. Each use case is emulated by experiments. Quality evaluation using SSIM and PSNR ratings is performed.
