    Integrating data that reside in different systems remains an often laborious process, requiring either manual steps or complicated programming. This paper describes a method for state-mandated reporting of childhood blood lead testing results that makes use of object linking and embedding technology and readily available software products to pull together information from different legacy systems. A Terminal Session emulator employs object linking and embedding automation to extract host data, and Visual Basic routines specify the user interface and database manipulation. This system has significantly increased the efficiency and accuracy with which blood lead testing reports are provided to the local state health department. The system provides a model for a relatively easy solution for laboratories and other groups that need a way to integrate standard data sets that are distributed across legacy systems. n J Am Med Inform Assoc. 2000;7:357-360.

  • Correlating Temporal Thumbprints for Tracing Intruders

    Abstract:

    The Design of TCP/IP protocol makes it difficult to reliably traceback to the original attackers if they obscure their identities by logging through a chain of multiple hosts. A thumbprint method based on connection content was proposed in 1995 to traceback attackers, but this method is limited to non-encrypted Sessions. In this paper, we propose a thumbprint based on time intervals, T-thumbprint, to identify a connection. T-thumbprint is a sequence of time gaps between adjacent TCP ‘Send’ packets of an interactive Terminal Session. An algorithm is presented to correlate two T-thumbprints to see if they belong to the same connection chain. We also discuss how to use T-thumbprints to traceback an attacker on the Internet, and how to defeat attacker’s manipulation. T-thumbprint has advantages of: (1) It can be applied to encrypt Sessions; (2) It does not require tightly synchronized clocks; (3) It can defeat attacker’s manipulation to some extent; and (4) It is efficient, can be used to trace attackers in real time.

    Most network intruders launch their attacks through a chain of compromised hosts (stepping-stones) to reduce the risks of being detected or captured. Detecting such kind of attacks is important and difficult because of intruders' evasion to detection, such as time perturbation, and chaff perturbation. In this paper, we propose a clustering algorithm to detect stepping-stone intrusion based on TCP packet round-trip time to estimate the downstream length of an interactive Terminal Session and give its resistibility to intruders' evasion. The analysis and simulation results show that this algorithm can detect stepping-stone intrusion without false alarm, and low misdetection. It can resist to intruders' time perturbation completely, as well as chaff perturbation to a certain extent.
