    Abstract Porcine teschoviruses (PTVs) belong to the genus Teschovirus within the family Picornaviridae . Hitherto, PTVs have had 13 serotypes associated with a variety of clinical Diseases. The virulent PTV-1 strains were associated with highly fatal, nonsuppurative encephalomyelitis of pigs (Teschen Disease) in the 1930–1950s. Today, less virulent Talfan strains of PTV-1 are more widespread, and PTVs have contaminated swine herds worldwide (endemic or enzootic) together with a variety of common swine pathogens (multi-infection status). The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which PTVs play a role in causing Diseases in the field, under the endemic and multi-infection situation, when most pigs in the herds are infected and immune. Based on the fecal-oral model of pathogenesis, a set of 15 organs were collected from 30 culled post-weanling piglets of 4–8 weeks old. For nested RT-PCR targeted on the 5′-NTR, the PTV detection rate was 96.7% (by heads), confirming the endemic status, and infection was most commonly detected in the intestines (averaged 61%) and lymphoid organs (averaged 59%), followed by visceral organs (averaged 37%) and the CNS (different parts varied from 17 to 47%). The correlation of PTVs detected by nested RT-PCR and a histological lesion were analyzed by Chi-square test showing that in the field situation only non-suppurative encephalitis in the caudal part of the brain ( P  = 0.054) may be marginal significantly attributed to infection by PTVs. By genotyping based on partial VP1 sequences, 5 serotypes, namely PTV-1, -4, -6, -7, and -11, were identified, with some animals having two serotypes co-existed in different organs.

    Zusammenfassung In Gewebekulturen von Schweinenierengewebe mit reiner Salzlosung, z. B. Tyrode-Losung als Medium wurde das Schweinelahmungsvirus zur Vermehrung gebracht und dabei wurden hohe Titer erzielt. Mit solchen an unspezifischen Begleitstoffen armen Kulturen, gemischt mit gleichen Teilen Aluminiumhydroxyd, wurden Kaninchen hyperimmunisiert. Die Seren dieser Kaninchen erwiesen sich im Neutralisationstest als streng spezifisch und mindestens so wirksam wie hochwertige neutralisierende Seren von Schweinen. Summary Resume Preparation in rabbits of specific antisera against Teschen Disease Tissue cultures of pig kidney prepared with pure saline or Tyrode's solution as medium were used for the cultivation of the virus of Teschen Disease to a high titre. Rabbits were hyperimmunised with the material, which was poor in non-specific antigens and was mixed with an equal amount of aluminium hydroxide. These rabbit sera proved to be strongly specific in neutralisation tests and were at least as effective as potent neutralising sera from pigs. La preparation de serums specifiques contre le virus de l'encephalomyelite infectieuse du porc (maladie de Teschen) avec du serum de lapin On reussit a multiplier le virus de l'encephalo-myelite infectieuse du porc dans des cultures de tissu renal de porc en solution saline pure, par exemple la solution de Tyrode et l'on obtint ainsi des titres eleves. Des lapins furent hyperimmunises avec de telles cultures pauvres en impuretes et melangees en parties egales avec de l'hydroxyde d'aluminium. Les serums de ces lapins se montrerent absolument specifiques dans les tests de neutralisation et au moins aussi efficaces que les serums neutralisants de porc les plus actifs. Resumen Obtencion en el conejo de antisueros especificos contra el virus de la paralisis infecciosa del cerdo (enfermedad de Teschen) En cultivos histicos de rinon porcino con solucion salina pura, por ejemplo solucion de Tyrode, como medio, se reprodujo el virus de la paralisis el cerdo, obteniendose con ello titulos elevados. Con tales cultivos pobres en sustancias inespecificas de acompanamiento, mezclados con partes iguales de hidroxido de aluminio, se hiperinmunizaron conejos. Los sueros de estos conejos se mostraron rigurosamente especificos en la prueba de neutralizacion y tan activos al menos como los sueros porcinos altamente neutralizantes.
