    Abstract:

    The study of economic behaviour comparatively between societies has been handicapped by a weakness in the handling of societal ‘context’, and this arises from epistemological challenges inadequately met by much positivist research. Consideration is given here to certain contributions to meeting this challenge, namely: Geertz's work on the analysis of culture via ‘Thick Description’; Maurice's advocacy of the society as an appropriate unit of analysis; Ragin's proposals for the comparative method; and Whitley's development of the business systems model. Ideas drawn from these contributions are applied in an analysis of the Chinese state-owned enterprise system, seen as a business system. Thus, a set of coordinative features of organizations are seen as embedded in a set of institutions distinct to China, these in turn resting on a cultural base, the latter serving to provide ‘meaning’ to the rest. The evolution of the business system is seen historically.

  • The Thick Description and comparison of societal systems of capitalism

    Abstract:

    Critiques of international business theory have recently pointed to weaknesses in the handling of context, of culture, and of policy implications. It is contended that the origins of such failings lie in the discipline's commonly accepted methodologies, and in turn that they have epistemological roots. As a route out of the dilemmas faced, a proposal is made to adopt more complete ways of handling determinacy, including the influences of history, culture, and the societal emergence of institutions. Business systems theory is drawn upon and a model proposed, developed from the work of Whitley. In this, culture is seen as underpinning formal institutions, which in turn underpin societal business systems. The use of the model relies on the ideas of Geertz on ‘Thick Description’ and of Ragin on holistic analysis. It is illustrated with a comparison of the American and French socio-economic systems, seen historically. Findings in strategy research about the geographically defined nature of firm supremacy in many industries are brought into the account, using the business systems literature. Consistent patterns of determinacy, as well as distinct and contrasting trajectories of business system evolution, are noted. A more complete and multidisciplinary form of explanation, grounded in socio-economics, is advocated as a means of meeting the challenges both of understanding and of policymaking at several levels.

  • Comparative Thick Description: Articulating Similarities and Differences in Local Beer Consumption Experience

    International marketing decisions are the result of complex trade-offs between global standardization and local adaptation. Similarities are too substantial and differences go too deep to be ignored. This chapter tries to articulate similarities and differences in local consumer experience across multiple contexts. It shows how language can be used as a discovery tool, along with depth interviews and checks of researchers’ interpretations by informants, to generate cognitive maps of consumption and taste experiences. Local words, used as emic signals, are combined into full profiles of the local experiences as narratives linking people to products and taste. Local profiles can then be merged to derive differences dealing with creolization patterns, local consumption experience, local preferences, perceptions and associations as well as commonalities emergent from within the contexts studied. The comparative Thick Description framework is applied to the beer consumption experience in ten countries (China, Croatia, France, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, El Salvador, Mexico) and 9 languages.

However, similarities are too substantial and differences go too deep to be ignored.     This paper proposes the use of anthropologist Clifford Geertz's‘Thick Description’ as a methodology for communications policymaking. Ethnographies employing Thick Description give voice to the concernsof ordinary citizens. They also help make policy more accessible, enhancingprospects for meaningful public participation in policy making and, thus,democracy. This is of particular concern in policy making involvingcommunications technology because of the relationship between communicationsand democracy. A literature review found no instances of authors explicitlyemploying Thick Description in communications policy making research, althoughjournalists, authors and others have employed the methods of Thick Descriptionwhile investigating such areas as the environment, automobile safety, andbusiness. Concerns regarding Thick Description in policy making, as with mostqualitative research, relate to its time-consuming nature and questionsregarding its validity.
