    Abstract:

    This research was carried out to control Tilapia population using M omordica charantia leaf meal as reproduction inhibitors. A total of 150 post juvenile Tilapia zillii female fish, weighing 30.36 ± 0.13 g were used. The leaf of Mormodica charantia (Bitter melon) was added to a basal diet (35% crude protein) at 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 g/kg diets and fed to female Tilapia zillii for 80 days. The fish were distributed in triplicate into 15 plastic tanks (1×1×1 m) at a stocking density of 10 fish per tank. Borehole water with pH value between the range of 6.90-7.67, temperature range between 25.4-26.6 o C and dissolved oxygen; 2.8-3.9 ml/l were used. The water volume of 400litres was maintained throughout the period of experiment. The fish was fed at 4% body weight/day in two installments at 09:00-09:30 hs. Histological examination of ovary in T. zillii fed 0 g of MCLM/kg diet showed no visible lesions nuclei of follicle cells were prominently seen while in treatment containing 20 g of MCLM/kg, few oocytes was seen in the ovary and there was generalized congestion, 40 g MCLM/kg diet section showed necrosis of the ovary, few oocytes were found in the ovary. In fish fed 60 g MCLM/kg diet, necrosis and abnormal gonadal development was noticed and ovary was devoid of oocytes. In fish fed 80 g MCLM, highly abnormal gonadal development and necrosis was noticed. Phyto chemical analysis of Momordica charantia showed the presence of charantin, alkaloids, momordicins, tannin, steroid, saponin, terpeniod and glycosine. There was decrease in fecundity (from 286 to 100), relative fecundity (from 3.91 to 1.24), and gonadosomatic index with increase in level of treatments used. Histological observations and fecundity analysis of T. zillii fed high dietary MCLM diet levels revealed that Bitter melon leaves may be effective as sterility-inducing agents in T. zillii .

    Abstract:

    A feeding trial was conducted for 75 days to determine the effects of garlic ( Allium sativum ) on nutrient utilization and growth in T. zillii fingerling. Five isonitrogenous and isocalorific diets (35% crude protein and 18.5MJ gross energy/kg diet) were formulated containing the control, D (0g garlic kg -1 basal diet), D1 (5g garlic kg -1 basal diet), D2 (10g garlic kg -1 basal diet), D3 (15g garlic kg -1 basal diet) and D4 (20g garlic kg -1 basal diet) and fed to triplicate group of Tilapia zillii at 4% body weight. Ten (10) Tilapia zillii (11.00 + 0.01g) fingerlings were stocked in each concrete tank with three replicate per treatment making a total of 150 fingerlings in all. T. zillii fed the diet having 20g inclusion level of garlic/kg basal diet (D 4) had better growth rate (32.12 ± 0.04) and feed efficiency (1.27±0.04)than the control diet and rest of the diets (D1, D2 and D3). Also, the survival rate of T. zillii was significantly higher in all the treatments (D1, D2, D3 and D4) compared to the control (D) and it increases with increase in the inclusion level of garlic in the basal diets (71.69-100.00) %. Apparent Protein Digestibility (APD) increases with increase in the inclusion level of garlic from 71.23% in the control diet to 85.16% in diet 4, (20 g garlic / kg control diet).

    Abstract:

    There is need to control unwanted/undesirable Tilapia recruitment in ponds using natural reproductive inhibitory agents in plants because they are less expensive and constitutes appropriate technology in developing countries. Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf meal (NLM) was added to a basal diet (350g crude protein and 18.5MJ gross energy/kg diet) at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 g/kg diets and fed to mixed-sex Tilapia zillii for 60 days to evaluate the effects on growth and feed utilization, reproduction traits, and histology of gonads. There were no significant variations (p >0.05) in the growth parameters and food conversion ratio. Indices of reproduction traits decreased with increasing dietary NLM levels. Fish fed with the control diet had significantly higher and better indices of reproduction traits (P<0.05) than the fish fed with NLM diets. Fish fed 0g NLM/kg diet showed normal testicular and ovarian tissues, and no pathological lesions occurred. Fish fed 0.5g NLM/kg diet showed alteration in testicular architecture and cystic seminiferous tubules. Fish fed 1. 0g NLM/kg diet showed severe testicular atrophy. Fish fed 1.5g NLM/kg diet exhibited cystic seminiferous tubule and atrophy of tissue. Fish fed 2.0g NLM/kg diet showed severe tissue atrophy, sperm cells disintegration and necrosis, hydropic degeneration, ruptured follicle, granulomatous inflammation in the insterstitium and necrosis in the ovaties. Reproduction traits and histological observations of gonads in T. zillii fed high dietary NLM levels revealed that neem leaves may be effective as reproduction inhibitory agents in T. zillii.

    The population structure of Tilapia zillii (Gervais 1848) from three reservoirs in Nigeria, Osun State (Opa, Osu and Igun) was determined by employing morphological and molecular (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) methods. For morphological studies, 25 morphometric measurements and six meristic counts were recorded on 40 individuals within each population. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed on the morphometric and meristic data using the PAST software. For RAPD studies, genomic DNA was extracted from caudal fin tissue using CTAB method and five primers were used to initiate PCR amplifications. All the clusters produced by the Principal components analysis (PCA) of the morphometric and meristic parameters overlapped indicating a low level of genetic differentiation between the three populations of T. zillii studied. The UPGMA cluster diagram from RAPD analysis identified two major genotypic groups with inter and intra group relationships. All individuals in the first cluster were from the Osu reservoir, while individuals from Opa and Igun reservoirs constituted the second cluster. Nei’s unbiased measure of genetic distances was 0.8532, 0.7321 and 0.7111 for Osu, Igun and Opa populations respectively. This revealed that Opa and Igun populations were genetically closer, while Osu populations is distant from them. The results suggest that the RAPD technique could be used to differentiate populations of T. zillii . However, additional methods such as microsatellite and sequence analysis can be used to maximize the efficiency of genetic differentiation studies.

    Abstract:

    Some aspects of the biology of Tilapia zillii were examined between October 1997 and February 2000. Fish specimens were collected using a graded set of gillnets and castnets. Out of 1486 fish specimens, 867 were males while 619 were females. Regardless of their sex a significantly high number of fish were caught inshore (69.57%) than in the offshore areas (30.43%). In addition 48.65% of all fish specimens were caught in the middle segment of the reservoir. A wide range of fish sizes were caught and the species was not spatially distributed ( χ 2 cal. 27.39< χ 2 tab. 67.51; df. 820). The species fed on a variety of food substances predominantly shoreline aquatic macrophytes, algae and plankton. The feeding rhythm which started around 6.00am reached a peak by 3.00pm in the afternoon and it declined gradually until 6.00pm.

    A total of 1486 specimen of the fish Tilapia zillii was collected by gillnetting and analysed for aspect of its reproductive biology in Opa reservoir, between October 1991 and February 1994. Sex ratio was approximately 1:1 (male: female). Fish total length at maturity was 15.1cm (males) and 13.2cm (females). The fecundity was 4329 ± 1153.9eggs, n = 685 with an egg diameter of 1.06mm ± 0.67mm, n = 619. The mean gonado-somatic index was 0.39±0.234.1, n = 865 (males) and 1.05±1.011.2, n = 619 (females).     Abstract:

    Specimens of Tilapia zillii (Gervais) were collected from Opa reservoir in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, between October 1991 and February 1994. The fishing methods employed were castnetting and gillnetting. Annular rings were formed on the scales of 1310 specimens of the species between December and February of each year of study. Male fish specimens grew faster and bigger than the female fish irrespective of age. Fish length at maturity was 11.0cm (male) and 9.7cm (female).     Gyrodactylus malalai sp. nov. is described from the fin surface of cichlid fishes Oreochromis niloticus (L.) and Tilapia zillii (Gervais) caught in Lake Turkana (Kenya). The new species morphologically resembles Gyrodactylus nyanzae Paperna, 1973, but can be readily distinguished by the shape of the marginal hook sickles and the size of its hamuli. The sequence data of rDNA spanning partial 18S, internal transcribe spacer 1 and 2 and the 5.8S gene is unique within GenBank. Genetically, as most similar Gyrodactylus ergensi Přikrylová, Matějusová, Musilová et Gelnar, 2009 was found (97.5%). Moreover, a specimen of G. cichlidarum from O. niloticus , and a specimen G. ergensi from Sarotherodon galilaeus (L.) were collected during sampling in Kenya. Likewise, additional sampling of O. niloticus from the Blue Nile in Sudan revealed the presence of the newly described species. These findings represent the first records of gyrodactylids in both African countries.

    The food and feeding habits of the redbelly Tilapia ( Tilapia zillii) and Guenther’s mouthbrooder ( ChromidoTilapia guntheri ) were investigated in an abandoned gold mine reservoir at Igun from June 2013 to May 2014. Using a cast net and gill-net fishing gears, 370 fish individuals were caught and their stomach contents were analysed by using the frequency of occurrence and numerical methods. Tilapia zillii comprised 53.78% (199 individuals), while ChromidoTilapia guntheri covered up the remaining percentage (46.22%) which is made up of 171 individuals. Food items in the stomachs of T. zillii individuals predominantly consisted of detritus, mud and algae (77.97%), while those in C. guntheri individuals mostly consisted fish remains, detritus and algae (81.67%). T. zillii exploited more food items (23 of 27) as compared to C. guntheri (17 of 27). The Schoener’s index value for the species was 0.65. The study showed that T. zillii and C. guntheri exhibited benthopelagic exploitation and are mainly herbivorous and omnivorous respectively based on the food items observed in the stomach contents of these species. The fish species fed on related food items as confirmed by Schoener’s overlap index (0.65), suggesting that there was overlap in the dietary requirements of the two species. This index value, however, was probably not an indication of competition for food between these two species because they exploited abundant food sources.

Species collected include Sarotherodon galilaeus (42.60%), Oreochromis niloticus (17.92%), Tilapia zillii (25.41%), Hemichromis fasciatus (10.61%) and Tilapia mariae (3.48%). Juveniles and sub-adults and adults were among the catch, the sizes were as big as 12.85±0.29cm SL, 109.22±6.00g BW in Tilapia zillii and small as 6.09±0.05cm SL and 8.07±0.15g BW in Hemichromis fasciatus. The diversity indexes showed that the diversity of Cichlids was lower in the two sites observed in Oyan Dam. The estimates of diversity indexes showed lower value for site 1 (0.284) than for site 2 (0.294); Simpson's diversity index was 0.716 for site 1 and 0.703 for site 2 while reciprocal indexes for site 1(3.521) was slightly lower than site 2 (3.367). Shannon-Wiener’s Index recorded in the site 1 (1.36) was slightly lower than site 2 (1.37). Pielou’s Index value recorded for site 1 was 0.845 and 0.852 for site 2.
